Gilbert Miles
Gilbert 'Gib' LaMott Miles (November 24, 1955September 4, 2023) was a Cheyenne and Arapaho politician who served as the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes Lieutenant Governor from January 2018 until his death on September 4, 2023. Biography Gilbert 'Gib' LaMott Miles was born on November 24, 1955, in Oklahoma City to LeRoy LaMott and Melba Sharp Miles. His family moved to Yukon when he was 13 and he graduated from Yukon High School in 1974 where he was the starting point guard, winning the State Basketball Championship. He went on to attend Bethany Nazarene University on a basketball scholarship where he graduated with a Bachelors in Political Science. He married Melinda Waters Miles in 1983 and they had three daughters, Mahgan, Mallory, Mariel and Mariah Miles. The Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes are a united, federally recognized tribe of Southern Arapaho and Southern Cheyenne people in western Oklahoma. History The Cheyennes and Arapahos are two distinct tribes with distinct histories. The Cheyenne (Tsitsistas/ The People) were once agrarian, or agricultural, people located near the Great Lakes in present-day Minnesota. Southern Nazarene University (SNU) is a private Nazarene university in Bethany, Oklahoma. History The history of the institution is one of various mergers and, therefore, one of differing institutions. While SNU claims its founding date as 1899, that founding date refers to an institution that merged with what is now SNU: Texas Holiness University. As an Oklahoman institution, SNU dates back to 1906, with the founding of the Beulah Heights Academy and Bible School. The roots of the original Southern Nazarene University are primarily in an orphanage of downtown Oklahoma City, founded by Miss Mattie Mallory.
