Gilbert Clements
Gilbert Ralph Clements, (11 September 1928 – 27 November 2012) was a Canadian politician and the 25th Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island from 1995 to 2001. Born in Victoria Cross, Prince Edward Island, he was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island in 1970 representing 4th Kings. He was re-elected in 1974, 1979, 1982, 1986, 1989, and 1993. He held the following positions: Minister Municipal Affairs, Environment & Tourism, Parks & Conservation (1974–1978), Opposition Critic for Finance and Energy (1979–1986), Minister of Finance & Minister of Community and Cultural Affairs (1986–1989), and Minister of Finance & Minister of the Environment (1989–1993). In 1981, he was interim Prince Edward Island Liberal Party Leader and opposition party leader. Order Of Prince Edward Island
The Order of Prince Edward Island (french: Ordre de Île-du-Prince-Édouard) is a civilian honour for merit in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island. Instituted in 1996 by Lieutenant Governor Gilbert Clements, on the advice of the Cabinet under Premier Catherine Callbeck, the order is administered by the Governor-in-Council and is intended to honour current or former Prince Edward Island residents for conspicuous achievements in any field, being thus described as the highest honour amongst all others conferred by the Prince Edward Island Crown. The 1993 Prince Edward Island general election was held on March 29, 1993. The campaign resulted in the re-election of the governing Liberals under Premier Catherine Callbeck, the province's first female premier, who had taken over only two months previous from former premier Joe Ghiz. Despite dropping in the popular vote, the Liberals gained on its seat tally, taking 31 of 32 seats, with only PC Leader Pat Mella as the sole opposition member in the Legislature. The 1979 Prince Edward Island general election was held on April 23, 1979. The election was held just one year after the 1978 election, which featured a 17–15 split in MLAs in the legislature.
