Gilbert Alexander Pontes Burns (born 20 July 1986) is a Brazilian professional mixed martial artist and submission grappler. He currently competes in the Welterweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). As of 20 May 2025, he is #10 in the UFC welterweight rankings. Burns is an IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu Champion (gi and no-gi), CBJJ Brazilian Champion, UAEJJF World Pro Champion, European Open medallist, and ADCC Submission Fighting World Championship medallist. He is the older brother of former UFC fighter Herbert Burns. Background When Burns was young, his father offered to fix a customer's car in exchange for three months of jiu-jitsu lessons for all of his boys. The World IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Championship is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu tournament held annually by the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation. It is widely considered the most important and prestigious jiu-jitsu tournament of the year. The first edition took place in February 1996 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
