Gierle
Gierle is a village of about 4,428 inhabitants in the Antwerp Province in Flanders, Belgium. It is part of the municipality of Lille. Characterised by its 19th-century village centre, which has an unusual circular shape, it is more known for its recreation park called "De Lilse Bergen" and its festival called " Sjock". A famous inhabitant of Gierle was Louis Neefs, who was the Belgian contestant for the Eurovision Song Contest twice. He has a statue in the centre of Gierle. Another famous inhabitant is Walter Meeuws, a retired football player who played for a few clubs in the Belgian first division and also for AFC Ajax. He has 46 caps for the Belgian national team and was in the squad of UEFA Euro 1980 where they reached the final. After his playing career, he has been a coach for teams all over the world. Louis Neefs
Louis Neefs (born Ludwig Adèle Maria Jozef Neefs, 8 August 1937, Gierle – 25 December 1980, Lier) was a Belgian singer and presenter, known for his participation in the Eurovision Song Contests of 1967 and 1969. Early career Neefs was training for a career in technical drawing at college in Mechelen when he joined the college choir and started learning to play guitar. At first his musical activities were purely recreational, but by the late 1950s he had become a member of a group called Sun Spot. Via performances and talent competitions, Neefs' distinctive singing voice came to the notice of famous musical talent scout Jacques Kluger, who had also discovered, among others, Bobbejaan Schoepen. Kluger and Schoepen brought Neefs to the attention of record companies, and he was signed to a contract in 1958, releasing his first album in 1960. Tielen
Tielen is a village in the province of Antwerp in Flanders, Belgium. It is part of the municipality of Kasterlee. The nearest city is the neighbouring city of Turnhout. Other neighbouring towns are Vosselaar, Lichtaart, , Lille and Gierle. The borders of Tielen are marked by two rivers: The Aa and the Kaliebeek. Almost one third of the village is still covered with pine-woods, heath and swamps. Typical for the Kempen area. The rest of this village is mostly used for residential and agricultural purposes. Sjock festival is a music festival in Belgium since . The festival draws a European crowd featuring Punk rock, Rockabilly, Garage rock and Surf music . The festival takes place every year in Gierle in the first or second weekend of July. Walter Meeuws
Walter Meeuws (born 11 July 1951) is a Belgian former footballer and manager. Playing career During his career he played for K. Beerschot V.A.C., Club Brugge K.V., R. Standard de Liège, AFC Ajax, K.V. Mechelen. He earned 46 caps for the Belgium national football team, and participated in UEFA Euro 1980 and the 1982 FIFA World Cup. After retiring from playing, he has been working as a manager, including a stint as the national team manager from 1989 to 1990. As a player, he won 4 championships, 2 with Standard in Belgium, 1 with Bruges in Belgium and 1 with Ajax in the Netherlands. He also won 2 cups and played the final of the European Championship with Belgium in Italy in 1980. He is considered one of the best Belgian defenders ever.
