Gibraltar Football League (2019-present)
The Gibraltar Football League is the only senior tier of association football in Gibraltar, founded in 2019 as the Gibraltar National League after a merger of the Gibraltar Premier Division, which served as the top division of football on the Rock since 1905, and the Gibraltar Second Division, which had existed since 1909. It was announced in August 2019 by the Gibraltar Football Association. The league is supported by the Gibraltar Intermediate League for U23 sides. Format Rumours of the new league began in 2018, when the Gibraltar FA announced plans for a single tier format in its league constitution for the 2018–19 Gibraltar Premier Division. On 1 August 2019, the GFA confirmed details of the restructure of domestic football in Gibraltar, and the format of the new 16 team league. 2021–22 Gibraltar National League
The 2021–22 Gibraltar National League season was the third season of the Gibraltar National League in Gibraltar, and the 123rd season of football on the territory overall. The league kicked off on 16 October 2021. Lincoln Red Imps were the reigning champions, winning the title on the final day of the 2020–21 season. Format The structure of the league was expected to follow that of the previous two seasons. Teams played one round of games as a single league, before splitting into two groups: the Championship Group contested by the top 6 sides, and the Challenge Group between the bottom 5 sides. The winners of the Challenge Group received the GFA Challenge Trophy and a bye to the second round of the next season's Rock Cup. Teams The following 11 teams competed in the 2021–22 season. Lynx F
A lynx ( ; : lynx or lynxes) is any of the four extant species (the Canada lynx, Iberian lynx, Eurasian lynx and the bobcat) within the medium-sized wild cat genus ''Lynx''. The name originated in Middle English via Latin from the Greek word (), derived from the Indo-European root (, ), in reference to the luminescence of its reflective eyes. Juan José "Juanjo" Bezares Alarcón (born 17 May 1981) is a Spanish former footballer who played as a defensive midfielder. Football career Born in Guadiaro, Province of Cádiz, Bezares started his career with Real Balompédica Linense, playing his first four seasons as a senior in Segunda División B, where he also represented Sevilla FC's reserves. On 1 February 2004, with the latter, he made his first-team – and La Liga – debut, fracturing his nose in a 0–1 away loss against Deportivo de La Coruña. In the 2004 summer, Bezares joined Cádiz CF in Segunda División, being promoted in his first season but suffering relegation in his second. Michael Bakare
Michael Adewale A. Oluwabunmi Bakare (born 1 December 1986) is an English professional footballer who plays for Glacis United. Formerly a forward, Bakare converted to a defender later in his career. Career Early career Bakare started his senior career in the 2006–07 season, playing for Hertford Town and Waltham Forest. The following season, Bakare signed for Welwyn Garden City. Glacis United
Glacis United Football Club is a professional football club from Gibraltar, founded in 1965 and a member of the Gibraltar Football Association (GFA). The club share the Victoria Stadium with all other teams in the territory. One of Gibraltar's most decorated teams, Glacis United currently compete in the Gibraltar Football League. History Glacis United were formed in 1965 and immediately saw success as the dominant force in Gibraltarian football throughout the 1960s through to the 1980s, winning 9 consecutive titles from 1965 to 1966 to 1973–74 and further consecutive titles in the 1980s. However, the emergence of Lincoln Red Imps saw Glacis's dominance decline, and their 17th and final title to date came in the 1999–2000 season. Michele Di Piedi (born 21 December 1980) is an Italian professional football former player and manager. Biography Early career and Sheffield Wednesday (1997–2003) Di Piedi was born in Palermo, Sicily, and began his career at U.S. Siracusa before signing for Perugia in 1999.
