Gallarate (; Lombard language, Lombard: ''Galaraa'') is a city and ''comune'' of Alto Milanese of Lombardy and of Milan metropolitan area, northern Italy, in the Province of Varese. It has a population of some 54,000 people. It is the junction of railways to Varese, Laveno and Arona, Piedmont, Arona (for the Simplon). Some to the west are the electric works of Vizzola, where 23,000 hp are derived from the river Ticino (river), Ticino. The Tour de Suisse () is an annual road cycling stage race. Raced over eight days, the event covers two weekends in June, and along with the Critérium du Dauphiné, it is considered a proving ground for the Tour de France, which is on the calendar approximately two weeks after the end of the Tour de Suisse. 1991 Giro D'Italia
The 1991 Giro d'Italia was the 74th edition of the race. It began on May 26 with a mass-start stage that began and ended in the Italian city of Olbia. The race came to a close in Milan on June 16. Twenty teams entered the race, which was won by the Italian Franco Chioccioli of the Del Tongo-MG Boys Maglificio team. Second and third respectively were the Italians Claudio Chiappucci and Massimiliano Lelli. The race was first led by Frenchman Philippe Casado who won the first stage into Olbia. Casado lost the race leader's ''maglia rosa'' () after stage 2a that contained a mountainous course. Éric Boyer took the race lead from Chioccioli after winning the event's fourth stage. The Italian National Road Race Championships is a road bicycle racing, road cycling event held annually, which decides the Italy, Italian cycling champion in the road racing discipline, across several categories of riders. The event was officially first held in 1906 (won by Giovanni Cuniolo), having been held unofficially since 1885. At the beginning there were often back-to-back wins from many riders. Costante Girardengo won the event nine times between 1913 and 1925, either side of World War I, including seven consecutive wins between 1919 and 1925. After his winning streak ended, another Italian cycling legend, Alfredo Binda, won 4 races in a row. Learco Guerra succeeded him with 5 consecutive wins.
