''Ghost in the Machine'' is the fourth studio album by the English rock band the Police. The album was released on 2 October 1981 by A&M Records. The songs were recorded between January and September 1981 during sessions that took place at AIR Studios in Montserrat and Le Studio in Quebec, assisted by record producer Hugh Padgham. ''Ghost in the Machine'' topped the UK Albums Chart and peaked at number two on the US ''Billboard'' 200. The album produced the highly successful singles "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic", " Invisible Sun", and "Spirits in the Material World", with a fourth single, " Secret Journey", also being released in the US. ''Ghost in the Machine'' was listed at number 322 on ''Rolling Stone''s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. The album was reissued in 1983 on CD. The Police
The Police were an English rock band formed in London in 1977. Within a few months of their first gig, the line-up settled as Sting (lead vocals, bass guitar, primary songwriter), Andy Summers (guitar) and Stewart Copeland (drums, percussion), and this remained unchanged for the rest of the band's history. The Police became globally popular from the late 1970s to the mid-1980s. Emerging in the British new wave scene, they played a style of rock influenced by punk, reggae, and jazz. Nigel Gray (1947 – 30 July 2016) was an English record producer. His album credits include ''Outlandos d'Amour'' (1978), ''Reggatta de Blanc'' (1979), and ''Zenyatta Mondatta'' (1980) for the Police, ''Kaleidoscope'' (1980) and '' Juju'' (1981) for Siouxsie and the Banshees, as well as five albums for Godley & Creme. Stewart Armstrong Copeland (born July 16, 1952) is an American musician and composer. He is best known for his work as the drummer of the British rock band the Police from 1977 to 1986, and again from 2007 to 2008. Before playing with the Police, he played drums with English rock band Curved Air from 1975 to 1976. As a composer, Copeland's work includes the scores of the films ''Wall Street'', ''Men at Work'', '' Good Burger'', and '' We Are Your Friends''; the theme music for television shows '' The Equalizer'', '' The Amanda Show'', and '' Dead Like Me''; and the scores for video games in the ''Spyro'' series and '' Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare''. The Official Albums Chart is the United Kingdom's industry-recognised national record chart for album, albums. Entries are ranked by sales and audio streaming. It was published for the first time on 22 July 1956 and is compiled every week by the Official Charts Company (OCC) on Fridays (previously Sundays).
