Boeing C-17 Globemaster III In Australian Service
The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) operates eight Boeing C-17 Globemaster III large transport aircraft. Four C-17s were ordered in mid-2006 to improve the ability of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) to operate outside Australia and its region. The aircraft entered service between November 2006 and January 2008, the second pair being delivered ahead of schedule. Two more Globemasters were ordered in 2011, the sixth being delivered to the RAAF in November 2012. Vityaz-D Autonomous Underwater Vehicle
The ''Vityaz-D'' is the first full-ocean depth, fully autonomous deep submergence vehicle. This Russian Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) was designed and developed by the Rubin Central Design Bureau for Marine Engineering in St. Petersburg, Russia under contract to the Advanced Research Foundation (Russian acronym: FPI, Fond Perspektivnyh Issledovaniy). The development of ''Vityaz-D'' began in September 2017. The keel-laying ceremony of the AUV was held at Rubin's assembly plant for experimental production in November 2018. It was tested in May 2020 with autonomous dives to 2400 meters in the Sea of Japan, to 5200 meters in the Philippine Sea, and culminating with a 10,028 meter dive into the Mariana Trench (note that the greatest depth of the Mariana Trench is 10,925 meters about 900 meters deeper than this ''Vityaz-D'' dive on 8 May 2020). Russia revealed the ''Vityaz-D'' program at the Army-2020 International Military and Technical Forum held in Kubinka, outside M ...

Orca (AUV)
The Orca is an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) that is under development by Boeing and Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) for the United States Navy. The Orca dates back to September 2017, when the Navy issued contracts worth about US$40 million each to Boeing, which had partnered earlier in the year with HII to build uncrewed submarines, and Lockheed Martin to develop competing designs for an extra-large unmanned undersea vehicle (XLUUV) capable of autonomous operation on missions up to several months in duration. In February 2019, the Navy awarded the Boeing/HII consortium a $43 million contract to begin work on building four of their XLUUVs, the design of which would be based on Boeing's earlier AUV '' Echo Voyager''. The following month, the Navy added a fifth vehicle to the order, with the total value of the contract reaching $274.4 million. Orca deliveries were planned to be completed by the end of 2022. The Navy took delivery of the first Orca in December, 2023. The ...

Future Of The Royal Australian Navy
The Royal Australian Navy, although a significant force in the Asia-Pacific region, is nonetheless classed as a medium-sized navy. Its fleet is based around two main types of surface combatant, with limited global deployment and air power capability. However, in 2009, a white paper, '' Defending Australia in the Asia Pacific Century: Force 2030'', was produced by the Australian government which set out a programme of defence spending that will see significant improvements to the RAN's fleet and capabilities. In recent times, Australia released its Surface Fleet Review in 2024, which analyses the future of the RAN and shows what the Government will procure. Subsequent Defence White Papers released in 2013 and 2016, and a Defence Strategic Update released in 2020 did not radically change the force structure of the Royal Australian Navy and repeated a modest number of 2 landing helicopter docks, 12 diesel-electric submarines 12 frigates and destroyers and 12 OPVs. However, followin ...
