Gethsie Shanmugam
Gethsie Shanmugam (, ) is a Sri Lankan teacher, psychological counsellor and social worker who had given her service to victims of the Sri Lankan civil war. She was awarded the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2017 for braving bombings and threats of arrests in conflict areas to counsel war widows, orphans and children affected by the civil war. Born in 1934 to a clerk in a British tea estate, Shanmugam had her education at Mowbray private girls’ boarding school. After the O/L examination she became a teacher and followed a course at Nallur training college where she met her husband, Muthuvelu Shanmugam. In 1967, she started her career as an English teacher at St. Joseph's College, Colombo and meanwhile she pursued an interest in psychology and became a volunteer counselor at the ''Family Services Institute'' and ''Subodhi Institute of Integrated Education'' in Piliyandala. Nawalapitiya
Nawalapitiya (, ) is a town in Kandy District, Sri Lanka. It is governed by an Urban Council. It is from Kandy and from Colombo, at a height of above sea level. Nallur (Jaffna)
Nallur (; ) is an affluent suburb in Jaffna, Sri Lanka. It is located 3 km south from Jaffna city centre. Nallur is most famous for Nallur Kandaswamy temple, one of Sri Lanka's most sacred place of pilgrimage for Sri Lankan Hindus. Nallur is also famous for being the historical capital of the old Jaffna Kingdom and birthplace of renowned philosopher and theologian, Arumuka Navalar. Lankadeepa () is a daily Sri Lankan Sinhala language newspaper which is owned by Wijeya Newspapers. They were established in 1991. The chairman of the organisation is Ranjith Wijewardene, the son of D. R. Wijewardena. The newspaper's coverage includes politics, sports, entertainment and military. The weekend newspaper, named ''Irida Lankadeepa'', is published on Sundays. Irida Lankadeepa won the SLIM-Nielsen People's Awards in 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2010 as Sri Lanka's most popular weekend newspaper. Wijeya Newspapers Limited (WNL) is a Sri Lankan media company which publishes a number of national newspapers and magazines. Formerly known as Wijeya Publications Limited, WNL was founded in 1979 by Ranjith Wijewardene, son of media mogul D. R. Wijewardena. Ranjith Wijewardene had been chairman of Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited before it was taken over by the government in July 1973. Ranjith Wijewardene bought the trade names and library of the Times of Ceylon Limited (TOCL) group after it closed down in January 1985.
