Getai
Getai () refers to boisterous live stage performances typically held during the Ghost Festival in the seventh lunar month and on the birthdays of Chinese deities. These shows typically last from 7.30pm to after 10pm and are commonly organised in Singapore, Malaysia and some parts of Indonesia (mainly in Riau, Riau Islands and North Sumatra). Additionally, stage setups are usually composed of temporary structures like tents situated in the suburbs of the city- namely, in empty fields, parking spaces or housing estates. Stage backdrops are usually made of cardboard and cloths painted in bright colours, vibrantly illuminated by coloured spotlights. The performers normally don loud and glittery clothing. Some getai hosts indulge in crude humour; others maintain quick-witted dialogue, joking about local and current affairs, sometimes switching between Mandarin, local Chinese dialects, and even English and Indian languages. ''881'' is a 2007 Singaporean musical-comedy-drama film written and directed by Royston Tan, based on the Singapore getai scene. It is the second Singaporean film that has been released in Japan. By 13 September 2007, the film had grossed over S$3 million, making it the top grossing Asian film in Singapore in 2007. It was screened at the Busan International Film Festival in South Korea, and was in competition at the 2007 World Film Festival of Bangkok. The film was also accepted as Singapore's selection for Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The film was submitted to the 44th Golden Horse Awards by Mediacorp, and received a nomination for best makeup and costume design. Hao Hao
Hao Hao (born Cheng Shih-wen on 13 November 1980 or 1981) is a Singapore-based Taiwanese getai singer-host and actor. Early life Born in Taipei, Taiwan, and an only child, Cheng did various odd jobs in his primary school days, helping out with the household finances since young. His mother is a housewife who used to run a karaoke bar. His mother suffers from polio and has difficulty walking. His father was a retired soldier who suffered a stroke when Cheng was seven years old. His father was bedridden for 15 years and died of an illness in 2004. GeTai Challenge 2018
''GeTai Challenge 2018'' (), is the second season of '' GeTai Challenge'', a hit reality-singing competition organised by Mediacorp Channel 8, returning after a three-year hiatus. The second season consist of 17 episodes premiered on Channel 8 on 20 April 2018, with the grand finals taped on 26 July 2018 at MES Theatre and aired on 10 August 2018. For the first time, the episodes were available on catchup on Gov.sg's YouTube channel, in addition to the Toggle website (unlike the last season, all episodes were uploaded) The show was sponsored by the Ministry of Communications and Information. GeTai Challenge
''GeTai Challenge'' (GTC, ) is a singing talent search competition for renowned getai singers organised by Mediacorp and broadcast on Channel 8 (Singaporean TV channel), Channel 8 in Singapore. The show began on 22 May 2015 and ended on 17 August 2015. A second season was renewed in 2018 with the show collaborated with Ministry of Communications and Information; the second season premiered on 20 April 2018 and ended on 10 August 2018. The concept of ''GeTai Challenge'' aims to promote the culture of getai in Singapore, and to find aspiring singers coming from the Getai industry; those singers were put together to compete for the ''GeTai Challenge'' title where the winner is determined by the judges' score itself. Liu Lingling (Singaporean Host)
Liu Lingling (born 1963) is a Singaporean host and singer who has been active in the getai scene for more than five decades. As an actress, she has appeared in multiple Mediacorp drama series and local films. Early life and career Liu's parents are from Malaysia. They registered their marriage in Singapore and Liu was born in Singapore. Spending her childhood years in Malaysia, Liu came back to Singapore when she was six for her primary school education.
