Gerry Murray
Gerry Murray (September 30, 1920August 9, 2019) was an American roller derby skater. She played for most of her career with the New York Chiefs, becoming a popular derby star known for her glamour as well as her on-track rivalry with Midge "Toughie" Brasuhn. Murray was one of the first American sportswomen to sign an endorsement deal and was inducted to the Roller Derby Hall of Fame in 1956. Roller derby is a roller skating contact sport played on an oval track by two teams of five skaters. Marjorie Clair Louise Theresa Brasuhn Monte (January 27, 1923 – 9 August 1971), known as Midge "Toughie" Brasuhn, was a roller derby skater. The Roller Derby Hall of Fame, also known as the National Roller Derby Hall of Fame, was founded in 1952,William H. Young and Nancy K. Young, ''World War II and the Postwar Years in America'', p.596 by the editors of the ''Roller Derby News'' paper. Johnny Rosasco and Josephine Bogash, Josephine "Ma" Bogash were the first two skaters to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. North High School is a public secondary school located in Des Moines, Iowa. It is one of five secondary schools in the Des Moines Independent Community School District. History North High School was originally founded as Forest Home School in 1875 and became a high school in 1889. The school was incorporated into the Des Moines School District in 1907. The school moved to a new location in 1896. In 1957, the school moved again. The school was renovated in 2011. A student was injured in a drive-by shooting in 2014. Another student was injured in a shooting connected to a confrontation at the school in 2021. On December 17, 1965, John Tinker was kicked out of the school for wearing a black armband in protest of the Vietnam War. His parents sued in Tinker v. Bill Bogash
Bill "Flash" Bogash (November 22, 1916 – March 20, 2009) was a roller derby skater and coach. Born in Chicago, he began his career in 1935 during the Great Depression, and skated until 1958. Bogash's career began after he and his mother attended the first Transcontinental Roller Derby in Chicago on August 13, 1935, a six-week race that tracked skaters' total distance traveled in laps around a track on a US map. He and his mother, Josephine 'Ma' Bogash joined the second race in September of that year, in Kansas. After racing with many teams throughout the 1940s, Bogash led the New York Chiefs to their first Roller Derby World Championship in 1949. Towards the end of his career, Bogash skated for the Los Angeles Braves. After retirement in 1958, Bogash went on to be a restaurateur in Los Angeles, California, with some of the most incredible steaks and twice-cooked potatoes on Earth!
