Gerry Jackson
Gerald Richard Jackson (14 October 1925 – 2 July 1997) was a motorcycle speedway rider from England. Career Jackson started his British leagues career during the 1950 Speedway National League Division Three season, where he rode for Rayleigh Rockets. He was part of the Rayleigh team that won the 1952 Speedway Southern League. The following season Rayleigh repeated the success and Jackson finished second in the league averages during the 1953 Speedway Southern League, recording a 9.68 average. Jackson's performances gained the attention of the big London clubs and he rode for the Wembley Lions during the 1956 Speedway National League. He then joined the Wimbledon Dons and rode for them for eight years. He helped Wimbledon seal four league titles and three cups from 1958 to 1962. 1953 Speedway Southern League
The 1953 Southern League was the second season of the regional third tier of speedway racing in the United Kingdom for Southern British teams. It was the final season before being replaced by the Southern Area League. From the previous season, Aldershot Shots dropped out, Wolverhampton Wasps moved up and Oxford Cheetahs came down to replace them. British League Riders' Championship
The British League Riders Championship was an individual motorcycle speedway contest between the top riders (or two riders) with the highest Calculated Match Average, average from each club competing in the British League in the UK, or the top division of the league during the period when it had two or more divisions. History Similar tournaments had been held before the formation of the British League in 1965, including the Provincial League Riders' Championship, open to riders from the Provincial League. The championship has been sponsored by John Player & Sons, Player's No 10, Skol, British Leyland, Leyland Cars, Gauntlet, Daily Mirror, Thomas Nationwide Transport, TNT Sameday and Dunlop Tyres, Dunlop. 1965 British League Season
The 1965 British League season was the 31st season of the top tier of speedway in the United Kingdom. It was also first known as the new British League which was formed in 1965, along with the British Speedway Promoters Association (BSPA). The league was an amalgamation of the National League and the Provincial League. Summary Norwich Stars had closed and therefore did not compete and Reg Fearman moved his Middlesbrough promotion to The Shay, which revived the Halifax Dukes who had last competed in the 1951 division 2. West Ham Hammers were the first ever British League winners. It was their first league success since 1937. The West Ham team included Scot Ken McKinlay who finished the season third with an average of 10.72 and the Norwegian champion Sverre Harrfeldt who finished fifth in the averages. 1956 Speedway National League
The 1956 National League Division One was the 22nd season and eleventh post-war season of the highest tier of motorcycle speedway in Great Britain. Summary The league consisted of seven teams after the West Ham Hammers ceased competitive speedway racing at the end of 1955. Poole Pirates came up from the second tier to replace them. Match line-ups were increased to eight riders after a single season with seven riders. Wimbledon won their third successive National League Championship. Norwich Stars rider Malcolm Flood died on 2 April, at Poole. The 25-year-old rider suffered fatal injuries despite an earlier warning from the race steward that he was riding too erratically into the bends. 1950 Speedway National League Division Three
The 1950 National League Division Three was the fourth season of British speedway's National League Division Three The league was reduced from 13 teams to 10. Halifax Dukes, Plymouth, Yarmouth and Hanley had all moved up to Division Two whilst Hastings Saxons dropped out. The two new sides were Aldershot Shots and St Austell Gulls whilst Tamworth changed their nickname from 'Hounds' to 'Tammies'. Oxford Cheetahs, who had finished bottom of the table during their inaugural league season in 1949, rose spectacularly up the league to win the title. The Oxford team was made up from an entirely new set of riders including Harry Saunders, signed as captain from Tamworth for £750, Pat Clark from Rayleigh for £250, Bill Osborne from Walthamstow, Raymond Buster Brown from Wembley and Eric Irons from Cradley.
