Gerry Duggan (actor)
Gerald Joseph Duggan (10 July 191027 March 1992) was an Irish-born Australian character actor. Although he never achieved stardom, he was a familiar face in small roles in film and television, both in Australia and Britain. His trademarks were his Irish brogue, pronounced lisp and prominent jaw. Early life Duggan was born in Dublin in 1910. When he was 16 he moved to New York, where he had his early exposure to theatre acting. In the 1930s, he moved to Australia, where he settled, although he worked internationally. Career He was almost 50 when he made his first film, ''The Siege of Pinchgut'' (1959), a British production made in Australia, which was the last film from Ealing Studios. Duggan was nominated for the BAFTA Film Award for Newcomer to Leading Film Roles, BAFTA Most Promising Newcomer Award for his role as Pat Fulton, but lost to the 13-year-old Hayley Mills in ''Tiger Bay (1959 film), Tiger Bay''. "A Tongue of Silver" is an episode of the 1959 Australian TV drama anthology ''Shell Presents''. Australian TV drama was relatively rare at the time. It starred John Meillon, who had been in ''Thunder of Silence'' in the same series. It aired on 17 October 1959 in Sydney, and on 20 February 1960 in Melbourne. Beacon Hill is a suburb of northern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia 17 kilometres north-east of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of Northern Beaches Council. It is part of the Northern Beaches region. History Beacon Hill was given the title when the Department of Lands built a trigonometric beacon there in 1881. The Criterion Theatre is a West End theatre at Piccadilly Circus in the City of Westminster, and is a Grade II* listed building. It has a seating capacity of 588. Building the theatre In 1870, the caterers Spiers and Pond began development of the site of the White Bear, a seventeenth-century posting inn. The inn was located on sloping ground stretching between Jermyn Street and Piccadilly Circus, known as Regent Circus. A competition was held for the design of a concert hall complex, with Thomas Verity winning out of 15 entries. He was commissioned to design a large restaurant, dining rooms, ballroom, and galleried concert hall in the basement. The frontage, which was the façade of the restaurant, showed a French Renaissance influence using Portland stone. Joe Orton
John Kingsley Orton (1 January 1933 – 9 August 1967), known by the pen name of Joe Orton, was an English playwright, author, and diarist. His public career, from 1964 until his murder in 1967 committed by his partner, was short but highly influential. During this brief period he shocked, outraged, and amused audiences with his scandalous black comedies. The adjective ''Ortonesque'' refers to work characterised by a similarly dark yet farcical cynicism. ''The Old Tune'' is a free translation of Robert Pinget’s 1960 play ''La Manivelle'' (''The Crank'') in which Samuel Beckett transformed Pinget's Parisians, Toupin and Pommard into Dubliners, Cream and Gorman. Its first radio broadcast was by the BBC Third Programme on 23 August 1960, directed by Barbara Bray with Jack MacGowran as Cream and Patrick Magee as Gorman. For the unspecified old tune played by Gorman on the barrel organ Beckett selected The Bluebells of Scotland', suggested by the bank of bluebells mentioned near the start of the play. Background In 1957, Pinget, who at the time was close friends with Beckett, undertook a translation of Beckett's radio play '' All That Fall'', which found Beckett's approval. Samuel Barclay Beckett (; 13 April 1906 – 22 December 1989) was an Irish writer of novels, plays, short stories, and poems.
