Richard Altmann
Richard Altmann (12 March 1852 – 8 December 1900) was a German pathologist and histologist from Deutsch Eylau in the Province of Prussia. Altmann studied medicine in Greifswald, Königsberg, Marburg, and Giessen, obtaining a doctorate at the University of Giessen in 1877. He then worked as a prosector at Leipzig, and in 1887 became an anatomy professor (extraordinary). He died in Hubertusburg in 1900 from a nervous disorder. Leopold Auerbach
Leopold Auerbach (27 April 1828 – 30 September 1897) was a Jewish German anatomy, anatomist and neuropathology, neuropathologist born in Breslau. He is best known for discovering the myenteric plexus aka Auerbach's plexus, which helps control the GI tract. Education and career Auerbach studied medicine at the Universities of University of Breslau, Breslau, University of Berlin, Berlin and the University of Leipzig, Leipzig. He became a physician in 1849, obtained his habilitation in 1863. From 1872 he was an associate professor of neuropathology at the University of Breslau. Discoveries Auerbach was among the first physicians to diagnose the nervous system using histology, histological staining methods. He published a number of papers on neuropathological problems and muscle-related disorders. Gas Mantle
A Coleman white gas lantern mantle glowing at full brightness An incandescent gas mantle, gas mantle or Welsbach mantle is a device for generating bright white light when heated by a flame. The name refers to its original heat source in gas lights which illuminated the streets of Europe and North America in the late 19th century. ''Mantle'' refers to the way it hangs like a cloak above the flame. Gas mantles are also used in some portable camping lanterns, pressure lanterns and some oil lamps. Gas mantles are usually sold as a fabric bag which, because of impregnation with metal nitrates, burns away to leave a rigid but fragile mesh of metal oxides when heated during initial use; these metal oxides produce light from the heat of the flame whenever used. Carl Auer Von Welsbach
Carl Auer von Welsbach (1 September 1858 – 4 August 1929), who received the Austrian noble title of Freiherr Auer von Welsbach in 1901, was an Austrian scientist and inventor, who separated didymium into the elements neodymium and praseodymium in 1885. He was also one of three scientists to independently discover the element lutetium (which he named ''cassiopeium''), separating it from ytterbium in 1907, setting off the longest priority dispute in the history of chemistry. He had a talent not only for making scientific advances, but also for turning them into commercially successful products. His work on rare-earth elements led to the development of the ferrocerium "flints" used in modern lighters, the gas mantle that brought light to the streets of Europe in the late 19th century, and the metal-filament light bulb. Peter Cooper Hewitt
Peter Cooper Hewitt (May 5, 1861 – August 25, 1921) was an American electrical engineer and inventor, who invented the first mercury-vapor lamp in 1901. Hewitt was issued on September 17, 1901. In 1903, Hewitt created an improved version that possessed higher color qualities which eventually found widespread industrial use. Early life Hewitt was born in New York City, the son of New York City Mayor Abram Hewitt and the grandson of Business magnate, industrialist Peter Cooper. He was educated at the Stevens Institute of Technology and the Columbia School of Engineering and Applied Science, Columbia University School of Mines. Mercury-vapor Lamp
A mercury-vapor lamp is a gas-discharge lamp that uses an electric arc through vaporized mercury to produce light. The arc discharge is generally confined to a small fused quartz arc tube mounted within a larger soda lime or borosilicate glass bulb. The outer bulb may be clear or coated with a phosphor; in either case, the outer bulb provides thermal insulation, protection from the ultraviolet radiation the light produces, and a convenient mounting for the fused quartz arc tube. Mercury-vapor lamps are more energy efficient than incandescent lamps with luminous efficacies of 35 to 55 lumens/watt. Their other advantages are a long bulb lifetime in the range of 24,000 hours and a high-intensity light output. Leo Arons
Martin Leo Arons (15 February 1860 – 10 October 1919) was a German physicist and social democratic politician. He was the namesake of the ''Lex Arons'', a law which disallowed members of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (, SPD) to teach at Prussian universities. Life and work Leo Arons came from a wealthy Jewish banking family in Berlin. His parents were Albert Arons (1826–1897), a partner in the prestigious private banking house ''Gebrüder Arons'', and Clara Goldschmidt (1837–1867). In 1887 Leo Arons married Johanna Bleichröder (1861–1938), a daughter of the banker Julius Bleichröder (1828–1907). Manfred Von Ardenne
Manfred baron von Ardenne (; 20 January 190726 May 1997) was a German researcher, autodidact in applied physics, and an inventor. He took out approximately 600 patents in fields including electron microscopy, medical technology, nuclear technology, plasma physics, and radio and television technology. From 1928 to 1945, he directed his self-funded and private research laboratory ''Forschungslaboratorium für Elektronenphysik'', where he developed and invented many techniques used in modern physics. After the World War II, von Ardenne was held in Soviet custody and was one of many of the German nuclear physicists in the former Soviet program of nuclear weapons, and later honored with the Stalin Prize by the former Soviet Union. A gyrocompass is a type of non-magnetic compass which is based on a fast-spinning disc and the rotation of the Earth (or another planetary body if used elsewhere in the universe) to find geographical Direction (geometry), direction automatically. A gyrocompass makes use of one of the seven fundamental ways to determine the heading of a vehicle. Hermann Anschütz-Kaempfe
Hermann Franz Joseph Hubertus Maria Anschütz-Kaempfe (3 October 1872 – 6 May 1931) was a German art historian and inventor. He was born in Zweibrücken and died in Munich. In his quest to navigate to the North Pole by submarine, he became interested in the concept of the gyrocompass. In 1905 he founded, with Friedrich Treitschke, the company Anschütz & Co (today Anschütz GmbH) in Kiel, Germany. Anschütz was the first firm to manufacture gyroscopic navigation instruments, which Anschütz-Kaempfe designed. Ottomar Anschütz
Ottomar Anschütz (16 May 1846 – 30 May 1907) was a German inventor, photographer, and chronophotographer. He is widely seen as an early pioneer in the history of film technology. At the Postfuhramt in Berlin, Anschütz held the first showing of life sized pictures in motion on 25 November 1894. Career Anschütz studied photography between 1864 and 1868 under the well-known photographers Ferdinand Beyrich (Berlin), Franz Hanfstaengl (Munich) and Ludwig Angerer (Vienna). He received recognition for his photograph of John of Saxony on horseback in 1867.
