Gercüş
Gercüş (; ) is a town and seat of the Gercüş District of Batman Province in Turkey. The town is populated by Kurds of the Kercoz tribe and had a population of 6,064 in 2021. The town is divided into the neighbourhoods of Bağlarbaşı, Çukurçeşme, Pınarbaşı and Yolağzı. Etymology The town's name in Syriac translates to "village of the walnut-tree". The Kurdish name is derived from the Kurdish word for " tell, settlement mound". History According to the ''Life'' of Jacob of Ṣalaḥ, Kfar-Gawze (today called Gercüş) was founded by a wealthy Roman soldier named Gawson prior to Jacob's death in 421 AD. Gawson had been forced to leave Ṣalaḥ after it was discovered that his daughter had committed adultery with his servant Decius. The village is also mentioned in the ''Life'' of Theodotus of Amida (). In the Syriac Orthodox patriarchal register of dues of 1870, it was recorded that Kfar-Gawze had sixteen households, who paid twenty-nine dues, and did not have a ... Batman Province
Batman Province (, ; ) is a province in Turkey. It was created in May 1990 with the Law No. 3647 taking some parts from the eastern Province of Siirt and some from the southern Province of Mardin. Its area is 4,477 km2, and its population is 634,491 (2022). Its current governor is Ekrem Canalp. The province is considered part of Turkish Kurdistan and has a Kurdish majority. History The Batman Province contains the strategic Tigris river with fertile lands by its sides, as well as rocky hills with numerous caves providing a natural shelter. Mhallami
The Mhallami people, also known as Mardelli or alternatively spelled as Mahallami (; ; ; ) are an Arabic-speaking tribal ethnic group traditionally living in and around the city of Mardin, Turkey. Although they originate from a diverse mosaic in West Asia, their historical roots have not been definitively established and most of their traditions were recorded orally. While the Mhallami identify with each other, their ethnic affiliation was disputed. The Mhallami typically identified as Arabs, but many identified as Kurds, and some identified as Assyrians. Nûbihar also known as Kent Işıkları (, ) is an academic publisher founded in March 1992 in Istanbul, Turkey. The publishing house specialises on topics pertaining to Kurds. The publication is named after a work of Ehmedê Xanî. History Nûbihar was founded as a Nursi-influenced publication house just after the ban on the Kurdish was lifted. Even though it was legal to publish in Kurdish, its work remained a high-risk activity as local officials were ready to stifle Kurdish cultural activities by any chance.
