Gerald Pereira
Gerald Pereira (20 September 1929 – 4 March 1976) was an Indian freedom fighter, author, lawyer and trade unionist from Goa. Active in the Goa liberation movement, he founded the first trade union in Goa. He is the author of the book, ''An Outline of Pre-Portuguese History of Goa''. Early life Gerald Antonio Eustaqio de Monte Pereira was born on 20 September 1929 in Vasco da Gama, Goa to the Catholic family of Xavier Pereira, who worked for a technical firm in Bombay. While studying at the St Joseph's Institute in Vasco, he began participating in the freedom struggle after being influenced by his school teacher, Dattatraya Deshpande, who was a freedom fighter. Deshpande was arrested after he hoisted the Indian flag and distributed nationalist pamphlets in Vasco. Pereira escaped to Bombay, leaving his education incomplete. Vasco Da Gama, Goa
Vasco da Gama (), often shortened to Vasco, is a city in the state of Goa on the west coast of India. It is named after the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama. It is sometimes also referred to as Sambhaji Nagar after Sambhaji. It is the headquarters of the Mormugão taluka (subdistrict). The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), or the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) is the governing civic body of Mumbai, the capital city of Maharashtra. ''Amrita Bazar Patrika'' was one of the oldest daily newspapers in India. Originally published in Bengali script, it evolved into an English format published from Kolkata and other locations such as Cuttack, Ranchi and Allahabad. The paper discontinued its publication in 1991 after 123 years of publication.
