The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets football program represents the Georgia Institute of Technology in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision in the sport of American football. The Yellow Jackets college football team competes in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). Georgia Tech has fielded a football team since 1892 and as of 2023, it has an all-time record of 761–544–43. The Yellow Jackets play in Bobby Dodd Stadium at Hyundai Field in Atlanta, Georgia, holding a stadium max capacity of 51,913. The Yellow Jackets claim four national championships across four decades. 1892 Georgia Tech Football Team
The 1892 Georgia Tech football team represented the Georgia School of Technology during the 1892 college football season. It was the team's inaugural season, only seven years after the school's founding. Led by Ernest West, a Georgia Tech professor in his first and only season as head coach, the Techs compiled a record of 0–3. West, who had previously played football at Navy, also served as Georgia Tech's captain. Professors West and Frank Spain began training the new team by October, holding practices each afternoon in the area of what would become Bobby Dodd Stadium. The team was also placed on a diet consisting of milk, crust of bread or toast, rare steak or mutton chops, and fruits for breakfast; ale, rare roast beef or ribs of roast, chicken, Irish potatoes, and toast for lunch; and cold meats, crust of toast, and milk or ale, for dinner. 2009 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Football Team
The 2009 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets football team represented the Georgia Institute of Technology in the 2009 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The team was coached by second year head coach Paul Johnson. Georgia Tech played their home games at Bobby Dodd Stadium at Grant Field in Atlanta. The Yellow Jackets finished the season 11–3, 7–1 in ACC play, represented the coastal division in the ACC Championship Game where they defeated Atlantic Division champion Clemson 39–34 to earn the ACC's automatic bid to the BCS. The Yellow Jackets would be invited to the FedEx Orange Bowl where they lost 24–14 to Iowa. Later in 2011 the ACC Championship was vacated by the NCAA due to the circumstances surrounding an improper benefits investigation. The Auburn–Georgia Tech football rivalry is an American college football college rivalry, rivalry between the Auburn Tigers and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Auburn leads the series 47–41–4. Series history The first game took place on November 25, 1892, in Atlanta, Georgia. They played in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association, SIAA until it was defunct in 1922, before joining the Southeastern Conference. Georgia Tech left the SEC in 1963, playing as an independent until joining the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1980. Despite no longer being conference opponents, they played annually until 1987. The Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket Marching Band is the official marching band of the Georgia Institute of Technology. Founded in 1908 by a group of 14 students, the Georgia Tech Band is one of the school's oldest student organizations. The Yellow Jacket Marching Band performs at all home Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets football, football games, and the pep band, composed of a contingent of marching band members, plays at all home Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets men's basketball, basketball and volleyball games. The Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia Tech is the 1930 Ford Motor Company, Ford Ford Model A (1927), Model A Sport coupe that serves as the official mascot of the student body at the Georgia Institute of Technology. The Wreck is present at all major sporting events and student body functions. Its most noticeable role is leading the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets football, football team into Bobby Dodd Stadium, Bobby Dodd Stadium at Historic Grant Field, a duty which the Reck has performed since 1961. Buzz (mascot)
Buzz is the current official mascot of the Georgia Institute of Technology. Buzz is usually represented as a stylized yellowjacket with yellow-and-black fur, white wings, a yellow head, and antennae. Buzz is almost never drawn with six legs, but rather with arms, legs, hands (in white gloves) and feet (in black Chuck Taylor All-Stars, Converse high tops), anthropomorphism, like a human. Invented in 1972 and restyled in 1979, Buzz reflects the tradition of referring to Georgia Tech students as "Yellow Jackets." Buzz is also one of Georgia Tech's emblems and trademarks, one that they defended in a 1998 legal conflict with the Salt Lake Buzz. "(I'm a) Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia Tech" is the fight song of the Georgia Institute of Technology, better known as Georgia Tech. The composition is based on "Son of a Gambolier", composed by Charles Ives in 1895, the lyrics of which are based on an old English and Scottish drinking song of the same name. It first appeared in print in the 1908 Blueprint (yearbook), Blueprint, Georgia Tech's yearbook.
