Georges Brugmann
Georges Edmond Brugmann (1829–1900) was a Belgian financier and philanthropist. Life Brugmann was born in Verviers on 18 October 1829, the son of the industrialist and financier Frédéric Brugmann. He studied at the Ecole Centrale de Commerce et d'Industrie in Brussels, before working at the family bank.Samuel Tilman, "Brugmann (Georges)", ''Nouvelle Biographie Nationale''vol. 8(Brussels, 2005), pp. 43-46. After his father's death in 1852 and his elder brother's in 1853, he and his younger brother Ernest headed the family firm. Verviers
Verviers (; ) is a city and municipality of Wallonia located in the province of Liège, Belgium. The municipality consists of the following districts: Ensival, Heusy, Lambermont, Petit-Rechain, Stembert, and Verviers. It is also the center of an agglomeration that includes Dison and Pepinster, making it the second biggest in the province and an important regional center, located roughly halfway between Liège and the German border. Congo Free State
The Congo Free State, also known as the Independent State of the Congo (), was a large Sovereign state, state and absolute monarchy in Central Africa from 1885 to 1908. It was privately owned by Leopold II of Belgium, King Leopold II, the constitutional monarch of the Kingdom of Belgium. In legal terms, the two separate countries were in a personal union. The Congo Free State was not a part of, nor did it belong to, Belgium. Leopold was able to Colonization of the Congo Basin, seize the region by convincing other European states at the Berlin Conference on Africa that he was involved in humanitarian and philanthropic work and would not tax trade. The Compagnie du Congo pour le Commerce et l’Industrie (CCCI) was a major conglomerate active in the Congo Free State, Belgian Congo and later the Democratic Republic of the Congo where its subsidiary companies engaged in a wide range of activities in the Congo between 1887 and 1971. These included railway and river transport, mining, agriculture, banking, trading and so on. It was the largest commercial enterprise in the Congo for many years.
