George Wilkinson (music Publisher)
George Wilkinson (5 November 1783 – 1855) was an English music publisher, and piano and candle manufacturer. Wilkinson was the youngest son of Charles Wilkinson. In 1797 he apprenticed to London music seller and publisher Francis Broderip, former partner in Longman & Broderip piano manufacturing business which had gone bankrupt in 1795. In 1805 Wilkinson took over his oldest brother Charles' half partnership in the company, which reorganized doing business as Broderip & Wilkinson until Broderip's death in 1807, after which Wilkinson purchased his partner's shares to form Wilkinson & Co. at 3 Great Windmill Street. By 1808 Wilkinson had arranged for Astor and Leukenfeld to manufacture upright, ''cabinet pianos'' licensed from William Southwell's patent (EN 3029, 1807). These instruments (like Petzold & Pfeiffer's ''harmomelo'') were conceived to support the strain of the strings with strong, continuous frames in order to keep better in tune than competing arrangements. George Wilkinson (architect)
George Wilkinson, FRIBA was an English architect, who practised largely in Ireland. He was born at Witney, Oxfordshire in 1814. He was the elder brother of the architect William Wilkinson (1819–1901), who practised in Oxford. Career George Wilkinson won a competition in 1835 to design a workhouse for the Thame Poor Law Union. The building was until 2004 a campus of Oxford and Cherwell Valley College. Wilkinson went on to design a total of two dozen workhouses in England, including those at Northleach (1835) Stow-on-the-Wold (1836) and Woodstock (1836–1837), each with wings laid out in an H-plan. Wilkinson built Tenbury workhouse (1837) on a double courtyard plan. For two workhouses, Witney (1835–1836) and Chipping Norton (1836), he used an unusual design of a saltire of four wings radiating from an octagonal central block. George Wilkinson (water Polo)
George Wilkinson (3 March 1879 – 7 August 1946) was an English water polo player who competed at the 1908 and 1912 Summer Olympics representing Great Britain. He was in the Hyde Seal team when he won the Olympics. Hyde Seal are a Manchester team. He was part of the British water polo team and won two gold medals. The International Olympic Committee credits him with a third gold medal from the 1900 Games, but this is incorrect as he was in England during the tournament. George Wilkinson (bishop)
George Howard Wilkinson (1 May 1833 – 11 December 1907) was Bishop of Truro 1883-1891 and then of St Andrews, Dunkeld and Dunblane 1893–1907. He was Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church from 1904, until his death. Life Wilkinson was born on 1 May 1833 and educated at Durham School and Oriel College, Oxford. He embarked on an ecclesiastical career with a curacy at Kensington after which he held incumbencies at Seaham Harbour, Auckland, Soho and Eaton Square, a parish in a wealthy part of London, before elevation to the episcopate in 1883. The founder of the Community of the Epiphany (1883), he died on 11 December 1907. Family Wilkinson married, on 14 July 1857, Caroline Charlotte Des Vœux, daughter of lieutenant-colonel Benfield Des Vœux, fourth son of Sir Charles Des Vœux, 1st Baronet; she died on 6 September 1877. Valençay SOE Memorial
The Valençay SOE Memorial is a monument in France to the members of the Special Operations Executive F Section who lost their lives working to liberate the country during World War II. The memorial was unveiled in the town of Valençay, in the department of Indre, on May 6, 1991, marking the fiftieth anniversary of the despatch of F Section's first agent to France. Former SOE agents Pearl Witherington Cornioley and her husband Henri, who lived nearby, promoted the establishment of the memorial. Witherington had worked in the area as a SOE agent during World war II. The monument was designed by Elizabeth Lucas Harrison, herself a former Resistance member, who originally gave it the name "Spirit of Partnership". Dedicated by the Minister of Veterans Affairs for France and Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, the memorial's ''Roll of Honour'' lists the names of the 91 men and 13 women members of the SOE who gave their lives for France's freedom.
