George Washington Covington
George Washington Covington (September 12, 1838 – April 6, 1911) was an American politician. Covington was born in Berlin, Maryland, and attended the common schools as a youth. He pursued a higher education at Buckingham Academy, and later at Harvard Law School. In 1861, he was admitted to the bar and commenced practiced in Berlin and Snow Hill, Maryland. Covington served as a member of the state constitutional convention in 1867, and was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-seventh and Forty-eighth Congresses, serving from March 4, 1881, to March 3, 1885. During the forty-eighth Congress, Covington served as chairman of the Committee on Accounts. He was not a candidate for renomination in 1884, and resumed the practice of law in Snow Hill. Berlin, Maryland
Berlin is a town in Worcester County, Maryland, United States which includes its own historical Berlin Commercial District. The population was 4,485 at the 2010 census, and has since grown in population. It is part of the Salisbury, Maryland-Delaware Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The town of Berlin lies over land that was originally the 300-acre Burley Plantation, patented by William Tomkins in 1677. Snow Hill, Maryland
Snow Hill is a town in and the county seat of Worcester County, Maryland, United States. The population was 2,156 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Salisbury, Maryland-Delaware Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Snow Hill was founded in 1686 in Somerset County by English settlers, who may have named it after a street and neighborhood of the City of London called " Snow Hill" despite the location's elevation of just above sea level and the infrequency of snowfall. The town received its first charter on October 26, 1686, and was made a port of entry in 1694. The United States House Committee on Accounts was a standing committee of the US House of Representatives from 1803 to 1946. It had purview over the financial accounts of the House's contingent fund, as well as some matters related to facilities and staffing. Charles Hopper Gibson (January 19, 1842 – March 31, 1900) was a U. S. Senator from Maryland, serving from 1891–1897. He also served as a U.S. Congressman from 1885–1891. Biography Gibson was born near Centreville, Maryland, and attended the Centreville Academy and the Archer School in Harford County. He graduated from Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland, engaged in the study law, and was admitted to the bar in 1864, commencing practice in Easton, Maryland.
