George Ramsay (footballer, Born 1855)
George Burrell Ramsay (4 March 1855 – 7 October 1935) was a Scottish footballer and manager. Ramsay was the secretary and manager of Aston Villa Football Club during the club's 'Golden Age'. As a player he was the first Aston Villa captain to lift a trophy, being instrumental in establishing the club as force in the game. A pioneer of the passing game, which he learned in his native Scotland, Aston Villa became renowned for their short, slick combination passing under his leadership. His trophy haul of six League Championships and six FA Cups established Aston Villa as the most successful club in England. He has been described as the world's first paid football manager. To this day, Ramsay remains one of the most successful managers in the history of English football. George Ramsay (English Army Officer)
Lieutenant-General George Ramsay (1652 – 5 September 1705) was a younger son of the Earl of Dalhousie and Scottish professional soldier. He began his career during the Franco-Dutch War and served with the Scots Brigade, part of the Dutch States Army, which accompanied William III to England in the November 1688 Glorious Revolution. Ramsay fought in the Jacobite rising of 1689 in Scotland before returning to Flanders in 1690 during the Nine Years War, being promoted Brigadier General in March 1691, then Colonel of the Scots Guards in September. After the outbreak of the War of the Spanish Succession, he was appointed Commander-in-Chief, Scotland in 1702 and died at Edinburgh in September 1705. George Ramsay, 8th Earl of Dalhousie (1730 – 15 November 1787) was a Scottish peer. He served as a Lord of Police (1775–82) and the Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, and was a List of Scottish representative peers, Scottish representative peer (1774–1787). Dalhousie was the second surviving son of George, Lord Ramsay (''dvp'' 25 May 1783) and was the grandson of William Ramsay, 6th Earl of Dalhousie (1660 – 1739). His mother, Jean Maule, was the daughter of Hon. Harry Maule of Kellie and thus the niece of the attainted James Maule, 4th Earl of Panmure, Earl of Panmure. He succeeded to the Maule estates with remainder to his second son, William Ramsay. General George Ramsay, 9th Earl of Dalhousie, (23 October 1770 – 21 March 1838), styled Lord Ramsay until 1787, was a British Army officer and colonial administrator. He served as the Governor of Nova Scotia from 1816 to 1820, Governor General of British North America from 1820 to 1828 and Commander-in-Chief, India from 1820 to 1832. In turn, his son, James Andrew Broun-Ramsay, 1st Marquess of Dalhousie, would later serve as Governor-General of India. Background and education Dalhousie was born at Dalhousie Castle, Midlothian, the son of George Ramsay, 8th Earl of Dalhousie, and Elizabeth, daughter of Andrew Glen. He was educated at the Royal High School, Edinburgh, and the University of Edinburgh. Admiral George Ramsay, 12th Earl of Dalhousie (26 April 1806 – 20 July 1880), known as George Ramsay until 1874, was a British naval officer. Career Ramsay was the son of Lieutenant-General the Honourable John Ramsay (1775–1842), fourth son of George Ramsay, 8th Earl of Dalhousie. He served in the Royal Navy from 1820 and was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath in 1856. He served as Commander-in-Chief of the South East Coast of America Station from 1866 to 1869 and was promoted to the rank of admiral in 1875. He succeeded his cousin, Fox Maule-Ramsay, 11th Earl of Dalhousie, in the earldom in 1874. In 1875, he was created Baron Ramsay, of Glenmark in the County of Forfar, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. Dalhousie's fourth son the Honourable Charles Maule Ramsay was a soldier and politician. Dalhousie died in July 1880, aged 74, and was succeeded by his eldest son, John.
