Sir George Philips, 1st Baronet
Sir George Philips, 1st Baronet (24 March 1766 – 3 October 1847) was an English textile industrialist and politician. He was closely associated with Manchesterism and has been described as the "unofficial member for Manchester", though not formally representing it. Biography Philips came from an old Staffordshire family that had held manors there since the reign of Edward VI of England, and were seated at Heath House in the same county since the early seventeenth century, that continued to be lived in by his cousins. George's father, Thomas Philips (1728–1811) of Sedgley, Lancashire, established a cotton manufacturing company in Manchester. George attended several schools, including Stand Grammar School. He was brought up in the dissenting tradition. Sir George Philips, 2nd Baronet
Sir George Richard Philips, 2nd Baronet (23 December 1789 – 22 February 1883) was a British Whig (British political party), Whig politician. Early life Philips was born on 23 December 1789. He was the eldest son of Sir George Philips, 1st Baronet of Sedgley, near Manchester and Weston House, near Chipping Norton, Warwickshire. He was educated at Eton College from 1805 to 1808, and Trinity College, Cambridge in 1808. Career Philips was returned, like his father, on the Bernard Howard, 12th Duke of Norfolk, 12th Duke of Norfolk's interest in 1818. Likewise, he signed the requisition to George Tierney, Tierney to lead and as regularly voted with Leader of the Opposition (United Kingdom), opposition. George Philips (cricketer)
George Henry Philips (18 July 1831 – 22 October 1886) was an English first-class cricketer. The son of Francis Aspinall Philips, he was born in July 1831 at Ardwick, Lancashire. He was educated at Eton College, before going up to Christ Church, Oxford in 1849. While studying at Oxford, he played first-class cricket for Oxford University Cricket Club on one occasion in 1853 against the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) at Oxford. Five years later he made a second appearance in first-class cricket, this time for the MCC against Oxford University at Oxford. For Oxford University he played as a wicket-keeper, taking one catch and making one stumping, while across both matches he scored 29 runs. Private (rank), Private George Phillips (July 14, 1926 – March 14, 1945) was a United States Marine who was Posthumous recognition, posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for sacrificing his own life to save the lives of fellow Marines on Iwo Jima by throwing himself over an activated hand grenade. Biography George Phillips was born in Bates County, Missouri on July 14, 1926, and worked on the railroad before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps at the age of 17 on April 25, 1944. During the Battle of Iwo Jima, the night of March 14, 1945, Private (rank), Private Phillips was standing guard as the other Marines in his unit were resting. A Japanese soldier tossed a hand grenade toward the group. Realizing the gravity of the situation, Phillips sacrificed his life by smothering the blast of the grenade with his own body to save the lives of his fellow Marines. For this action, he was awarded United States, his nation's highest military decoration – the Medal of Honor. ...
