George Naismith
George William Naismith (1909 – 23 May 1983) was an Australian professional golfer. He won the 1937 Australian Open. Early life Naismith was initially an assistant professional at Kingston Heath Golf Club. In 1929 he was appointed the professional at Riversdale Golf Club. Professional career Naismith first came to notice in the 1927 Australian Open when, after three mediocre rounds, he finished with a round of 72. In 1928 he reached the semi-finals of the Age and Leader purse, only losing at the 20th hole. In 1931 Naismith qualified as the Victorian representative in the Spalding Australian Professional Overseas Championship, the main prize for which was an expenses-paid trip to play in the 1931 Open Championship at Carnoustie. In the Victorian qualifying event, Naismith and John Young were tied on 316 after 72 holes but Naismith won the 18-hole playoff the following day by 10 strokes. Lakes International Cup
The Lakes International Cup was a men's team golf competition between teams of professional golfers from Australia and the United States. It was played four times between 1934 and 1954. The United States won the first three matches with Australia winning the final match in 1954. The Lakes Golf Club staged the inaugural contest in 1934, donating the trophy, and hosted the final stage of the 1952 and 1954 matches. Trophy The original trophy had a inscribed silver base with a wooden plinth and a large bowl on top. Only the silver base survives but the bowl and plinth have been recreated. Format The 1934 and 1936 matches were contested by teams of six players over two days with three 36-hole foursomes on the first day and six 36-hole singles matches on the second day. Vicars Shield
The Vicars Shield was a professional team golf competition between the states of Australia. It was first played in 1930 and continued as an interstate event until 1956. It was the professional equivalent of the amateur Australian Men's Interstate Teams Matches, which had been held since 1904. The trophy was donated by Sir William Vicars. In 1957 and 1958, the event was replaced with a "north" against "south" match before being abandoned. The shield was later reused for the interstate club professionals' competition, as part of the Australian Club Professional Championship. History The first event was held at the Metropolitan Golf Club in 1930 between South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. ''The Herald'' was a morning and, later, evening broadsheet newspaper published in Melbourne, Australia, from 3 January 1840 to 5 October 1990, which is when it merged with its sister morning newspaper '' The Sun News-Pictorial'' to form the '' Herald-Sun''. Victorian Close Championship
The Victorian Close Championship was an annual golf tournament held in Victoria, Australia. It was founded in 1948. It was superseded by the Victorian Open which was first held in 1957, but was reintroduced the following year and continued until about 1978. History A 36-hole close championship was planned for 1939 but was cancelled because of the war. The Victorian Golf Association revived the idea in 1947 as a 36-hole "open scratch event", open to amateurs and professionals resident in Victoria, played on a single day at Victoria Golf Club. Professional George Naismith and amateur Bill Higgins tied with scores of 149. The first Close Championship was played at Huntingdale in 1948 and was won by Ossie Pickworth who finished 12 strokes ahead of the field. ''Truth'' was a newspaper published in Sydney, Australia. It was founded in August 1890 by William Nicholas Willis and its first editor was Adolphus Taylor. Tom McKay (golfer)
Thomas Sidney McKay (1 October 1909 – 5 January 2004) was an Australian golfer, barrister and politician. Early life McKay was born in Mosman to journalist Claude Eric Ferguson McKay and Dorothy Hope Sidney. He went to the Shore School before studying at the University of Sydney where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1931 and a Bachelor of Laws in 1934. He was an amateur golfer and on 2 August 1934 he married Odette Anita Madeline Lefebvre, who was also a golf champion, having won the NSW State championship in 1931 and 1933. They had two children before divorcing in 1946. He married a second time to Peggy Burleigh on 28 October 1949, and they had a daughter. James Bennett Elliott Ferrier (24 February 1915 – 13 June 1986) was an Australian professional golfer from Manly, New South Wales. After compiling a fine record as an amateur golfer in Australia during the 1930s, he moved to the United States in 1940, turned professional in 1941, and joined the U.S. PGA Tour.
