George Khoury (record Producer)
George Khoury (July 17, 1909 – January 8, 1998, Lake Charles, Louisiana) was an American pioneer swamp pop and cajun record producer known for co-writing and composing the No. 1 hit song " Sea of Love" by Phil Phillips as well as "Mathilda" by Cookie and his Cupcakes. His swamp pop, cajun and swamp blues recordings made a big impact on American popular culture. He recorded Nathan Abshire and the song "Pine Grove Blues". Later he would record Lawrence Walker and His Wandering Aces, Elise Deshotel with Dewey Balfa, Harry Choates, Jimmy Newman, and Phil Phillips with the Twilights. Biography Khoury's birthplace is unknown; however, he was of Lebanese ancestry. In 1947, as an owner of a record shop, he noticed a lack of Cajun music being recorded in south Louisiana and decided to open a business to compete with Ed Shuler's Goldband Records and J. D. Gold Star Records is an American independent record label founded by Bill Quinn in Houston, Texas in 1941. History In 1939 Bill Quinn settled in Houston and established the Quinn Radio Service, a radio repair shop. After being intrigued by a home disc recorder he was asked to repair, he purchased one and began to experiment with it. In 1941 he opened a shop at 3104 Telephone Road in Houston, Texas, where he recorded personalized voice messages. Quinn renamed the business Quinn Recording Company and soon began recording radio jingles. Venturing into music production in 1944, he founded the short-lived Gulf Record Company label. In 1946, Quinn founded Gold Star Records, initially recording local country (or "hillbilly") artists before expanding to record local blues and Cajun artists. Mercury Records is an American record label owned by Universal Music Group. It had significant success as an independent operation in the 1940s and 1950s. The Fabulous Thunderbirds is an American blues rock band formed in 1974. Singer Kim Wilson is the only constant member through the band's entire history. Their 1986 album ''Tuff Enuff'' sold over a million copies, and spawned two minor hit singles: the title track and "Wrap It Up". Career After performing for several years in the Austin, Texas, blues scene, the band won a recording contract with Takoma Records, Takoma/Chrysalis Records and later signed with Epic Records. In 2011, they signed with Severn Records. Freddy Fender (born Baldemar Garza Huerta; June 4, 1937 – October 14, 2006) was an American Country and Tejano singer, known for his work as a solo artist and in the groups Los Super Seven and the Texas Tornados. Swamp Pop
Swamp pop is a music genre indigenous to the Acadiana region of south Louisiana and an adjoining section of southeast Texas. Created in the 1950s by young Cajuns and Creoles, it combines New Orleans–style rhythm and blues, Country music, country and western, and traditional French Louisiana musical influences. Although a fairly obscure genre, swamp pop maintains a large audience in its south Louisiana and southeast Texas homeland, and it has acquired a small but passionate cult following in the United Kingdom, and Northern Europe.
