George Irving (American Actor)
George Henry Irving (October 5, 1874 – September 11, 1961) was an American film actor and director. Career Irving started his career as a theatre actor, notably as leading man to Maude Adams. He came to Hollywood in 1914 and acted in over 250 films from 1914 until 1948. Irving was initially an actor-director and directed about 35 silent films, which are mostly forgotten today. He switched exclusively to acting in the mid-1920s and became a character actor until the later 1940s. Irving usually played reputable and stern persons of authority in supporting roles. He is perhaps best known for his roles as Robert Wentworth in '' Coquette'' (1929), and as the lawyer Alexander Peabody in '' Bringing Up Baby'' (1938). He ended his prolific career with two television roles in the 1950s. Personal life George Irving and his wife, Katherine Gilman, had two daughters, Katharine and Dorothy. He has also been in ''The Sweeney'', '' The Professionals'', ''Shoestring'', ''Juliet Bravo'', '' Bergerac'', '' Dempsey and Makepeace'', '' EastEnders'' as Trevor Smith, ''Inspector Morse'', ''Peak Practice'', ''The Bill'', '' Cadfael'', '' Casualty'', ''Dalziel and Pascoe'' and '' Doctors''. In 2006 he starred in Daniel Mulloy’s BAFTA Award winning short film '' Antonio's Breakfast''. Also in 2006 he toured in John Fowles' The French Lieutenant's Woman. In May/June 2007 he starred in Conor McPherson's Shining City at the Octagon Theatre, Bolton. His portrayal of John in Shining City earned him a nomination for Best Actor in the Manchester Evening News Theatre Awards. George Vere Irving
George Vere Irving (1816–1869) was a Scottish lawyer and antiquary. Life George Vere Irving was born on 9 October 1816 and was the only son of Alexander Irving of Newton, Lanarkshire, who became a Scottish judge with the title of Lord Newton. In 1837, he was called to the Scottish bar. Irving took part in the volunteer movement, and became captain of the Carnwath troop. He died at 5 St. Mark's Crescent, Regent's Park, London, on 29 October 1869, aged 53.
