George Haddock (musician)
George Haddock (7 August 1823 – 12 September 1907) was an English violinist, and professor of music born in Killingbeck, Leeds. He was involved extensively in the music scene of Leeds and Bradford during the mid to late 19th century and founded the Leeds College of Music (later known as the Yorkshire College of Music and rebranded as Music House in 2022) in 1894. Biography Early life Haddock was brought up in a musical family with most members playing instruments. His brother Thomas Haddock, a violincellist taught by Robert Lindley, played in quartets with Paganini, de Bériot, Mendelssohn, J.W. Thirlwell, John David Loder, and Joseph Rudersdorff. These along with other visitors to the household including Ole Bull greatly influenced the young George eventually taking up the violin. Carlo Giuseppe Testore
Carlo Giuseppe Testore (c. 1665–1738) was an Italian luthier, who worked in his later life in Milan. Biography Testore was born in Novara. A student of Giovanni Grancino, he went to Milan in 1687 and set up his workshop at the Sign of the Eagle ("All'aquila") in the Contrada Larga in Milan. His two sons, Carlo Antonio Testore (1688after 1764) and Paolo Antonio Testore (1690after 1760), students of their father, also worked as luthiers in Milan. Giovanni, son of Carlo, and (?Genn)-aro, son of Paolo, continued the workshop in Milan during the 1760s. Testore instruments today Carlo Giuseppe Testore is especially valued for his double basses. Currently, Russian violist Yuri Bashmet plays a Paolo Antonio Testore instrument. Beckett Street Cemetery
Beckett Street Cemetery (also known as Burmantofts Cemetery) is a closed cemetery in Burmantofts, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. Founded in 1842, the site was officially opened in 1845 and is recognised as being one of England's first municipal burial sites (Hunslet Cemetery, also in Leeds, opened one month earlier). Although the cemetery was closed to interments in 2001, it remains open for visitors, and has two listed structures besides being a listed park itself. History The site was approved as part of the Leeds Burial Grounds Act 1842 ( 5 & 6 Vict. c. ciii), initially to cover an area of , and saw its first burial on 14 August 1845. Wilhelmine Maria Franziska Neruda, also known as Wilma Norman-Neruda and Wilma, Lady Hallé, was a Czech virtuoso violinist, chamber musician, and teacher. Life and career Born in Brno (Brünn), Moravia, then part of the Austrian Empire, Neruda came from a musical family. Her great-great-grandfather was the noted Bohemian composer Johann Baptist Georg Neruda (1708–1780), and her father, Josef Neruda (1807–1875), was the organist of the cathedral of Brno. Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst
Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst (8 June 1812 – 8 October 1865) was a Moravian-Jewish violinist, violist and composer. He was seen as the outstanding violinist of his time and one of Niccolò Paganini's greatest successors. He contributed to polyphonic playing and discovered new ways to compose polyphonic violin music. François Tourte
François Xavier Tourte (1747 – 25 April 1835) was a French bow maker who made a number of significant contributions to the development of the bow of stringed instruments, and is considered to be the most important figure in the development of the modern bow. Because of this, he has often been called the Stradivari of the bow. Development of the modern bow Tourte spent eight years as a watchmaker's apprentice before finally becoming an apprentice to his luthier father, Nicolas Pierre Tourte ''père'' (c.1700 - 1764). Antonio Amati ( – 1607) was an Italian luthier, active from 1560 to 1605. Biography Born in Cremona, Andrea Amati's son and Girolamo Amati's brother, Antonio worked first with his father, then with his brother, in the same workshop. With the latter, he refined his construction technique and style. Francesco Rugeri
Francesco Rugeri ( – 28 October 1698), also known as Ruger, Rugier, Rugeri, Ruggeri, Ruggieri, Ruggerius, was the first of an important family of luthiers, the Casa Rugeri in Cremona, Italy. His instruments are masterfully constructed. His violins are inspired by Nicolò Amati's "Grand Amati" pattern. Francesco was the first to develop a smaller cello design, which has become the standard for modern cello dimensions. Today, Rugeri's instruments are nearly as renowned as Nicolò Amati's instruments. The Rugeri family is not to be confused with the Rogeri family of Brescia who were also noted luthiers following the tradition of Amati.
