George Green Sampson
George Green Sampson (1804-1885) was a physician and politician in Ipswich, Suffolk. In 1819 he was apprenticed to his uncle, John Denny, who was a prominent surgeon in Ipswich with a practice at Tower Ditches known as Denny's Passage. In 1826 he received further training at Guy's Hospital for six months and received his Licentiate of the Society of Apothecaries. In 1827 he became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons. He then purchased the medical practice of William Hamilton in Ipswich for £100. He was the first Mayor of Ipswich to be elected four times, serving 1838-1839, 1846-1847, 1870-1871 and 1871-1872. It was in his capacity as mayor of Ipswich that he laid the first stone of Ipswich Docks in 1839. He was responsible for the introduction of the gold chain of office and badge in November 1871. Ipswich () is a port town and borough in Suffolk, England, of which it is the county town. The town is located in East Anglia about away from the mouth of the River Orwell and the North Sea. John Denny (physician)
John Allen Denny (born November 8, 1952) is an American former professional baseball right-handed pitcher who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the St. Louis Cardinals, Cleveland Indians, Philadelphia Phillies, and Cincinnati Reds, from to . Denny won the National League (NL) Cy Young Award, in . Career Denny was born in Prescott, Arizona, and attended Prescott High School. He excelled at sports there, playing football and basketball as well as baseball. In the 1970 amateur draft, he was selected by the Cardinals in the 29th round. He made his professional debut that year at the age of 17. Denny pitched for the Triple-A Tulsa Oilers in 1974 and went 9–8 with a 3.75 earned run average. The Royal College of Surgeons is an ancient college (a form of corporation) established in England to regulate the activity of surgeons. Derivative organisations survive in many present and former members of the Commonwealth. These organisations are now also responsible for training surgeons and setting their examinations. The Ipswich Docks, Ipswich wet dock and the wet dock,) are a series docks in Port of Ipswich located at a bend of the River Orwell which has been used for trade since at least the 8th Century. A wet dock was constructed in 1842 which was 'the biggest enclosed dock in the United Kingdom' at the time. A major regeneration of the area has taken place since 1999. History Initial work . The Provincial Medical and Surgical Association (PMSA) was founded by Sir Charles Hastings on 19 July 1832 at a meeting in the Board Room of the Worcester Infirmary. It was initially established for the sharing of scientific and medical knowledge. This is now the site of the University of Worcester's City Campus. An audience of 50 doctors was present to hear Hastings propose the inauguration of an Association both friendly and scientific for the sharing of knowledge between doctors. Ten years after its initial meeting the association's membership had grown to 1,350 and it had begun to publish a weekly journal, ''The Provincial Medical and Surgical Journal''. Sir James Robert George Graham, 2nd Baronet (1 June 1792 – 25 October 1861) was a British statesman, who notably served as Home Secretary and First Lord of the Admiralty. He was the eldest son of Sir James Graham, 1st Baronet, by Lady Catherine, eldest daughter of the 7th Earl of Galloway. In 1819, he married Fanny Callander, youngest daughter of Sir James Campbell of Craigforth and Ardkinglas Castle. Sir James was created Doctor of Laws at the University of Cambridge in 1835, was Lord Rector of the University of Glasgow, 1840. He was First Lord of the Admiralty from 1830 to 1834 when he resigned on account of the government pressing for a reform of the Irish Church.
