George Crowe
George Daniel Crowe (March 22, 1921 – January 18, 2011) was an American professional baseball player who appeared in 702 games in the Major League Baseball, major leagues as a first baseman and pinch hitter between and . Before joining minor league baseball in 1949, Crowe played with the Negro National League (1933–48), Negro National League's (Rochester) New York Black Yankees in 1947 and 1948, and he also played professional basketball. Born in Whiteland, Indiana, Crowe graduated from Franklin Senior High School (Indiana), high school in nearby Franklin, Indiana, Franklin and Indiana Central College (now the University of Indianapolis), where he was a member of the Class of 1943. He was the first Indiana "Mr. Basketball" award, Indiana "Mr. Basketball" and served in the United States Army during World War II. Pinch Hitter
In baseball, a pinch hitter (PH) is a substitute batter. Batters can be substituted at any time while the ball is dead (not in active play); the manager may use any player who has not yet entered the game as a substitute. Unlike basketball, American football or ice hockey, and in a similar way to association football, baseball does not have a free substitution rule (at the professional level) and thus the replaced player is not allowed back into that game.
