George C. Butte
George Charles Butte (May 9, 1877 – January 18, 1940) was an American attorney, U.S. Army officer, educator, jurist, and Republican politician who served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines. He was also a candidate in the 1924 Texas gubernatorial election, running against Ma Ferguson. He also served as attorney general (1925-1928) and acting governor of Puerto Rico (1927-1928). An associate justice of the Supreme Court () is one of fifteen members of the Supreme Court of the Philippines, Supreme Court, the highest court in the Philippines. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines, chief justice presides over the high court, but carries only one of the 15 votes in the court. Traditionally, the chief justice is deemed ''primus inter pares'' ("first among equals") among the justices. Until 1973, only men were appointed as Associate Justices to the Court. Cecilia Muñoz-Palma, an appointee of President of the Philippines, President Ferdinand Marcos, was the first woman to sit on the court. Miriam Amanda "Ma" Ferguson ( ''née'' Wallace; June 13, 1875 – June 25, 1961) was an American politician who served two non-consecutive terms as the governor of Texas: from 1925 to 1927, and from 1933 to 1935. She was the first female governor of Texas, and the second woman elected to the governorship of any U.S. state to assume office, after Nellie Tayloe Ross of Wyoming.
