George Brand (politician)
George Edmund Dowd Brand (11 March 1911 – 5 March 1997) was an Australian politician who served as a Liberal Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1965 to 1971, representing Lower North Province. Brand was born in Kalgoorlie to Brigid Katherine (née Dowd) and George Brand. He attended Eastern Goldfields High School and then began working as a clerk for Western Australian Government Railways. He later joined his father's freight business. Brand enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in 1943 (after previous service with the Citizens Military Forces), and during the war served in transport and supply units. He was discharged in 1945 and returned to the family business, taking it over completely following the death of his father in 1957. The Western Australian Legislative Council is the upper house of the Parliament of Western Australia, a state of Australia. It is regarded as a house of review for legislation passed by the Western Australian Legislative Assembly, Legislative Assembly, the lower house. The Western Australian Labor Party, officially known as WA Labor, is the Western Australian branch of the Australian Labor Party (ALP). It is the current governing party of Western Australia since winning the 2017 state election under Mark McGowan. Shortly afterwards the federal Labor Party was formalised in time for Australian federation in 1901. David Brand
Sir David Brand Order of St Michael and St George, KCMG (1 August 1912 – 15 April 1979) was an Australian politician. He was the longest-serving premier of Western Australia, in office from 1959 to 1971, and was state leader of the Liberal Party of Australia, Liberal Party from 1957 to 1972. Brand was born in Dongara, Western Australia. He was raised on farms in the Mid West (Western Australia), Mid West and left school at the age of 14. He moved to the Eastern Goldfields in 1935 and worked as a miner for several years, later serving in the Australian Army during World War II where he was wounded on the Greek campaign. Brand was elected to the Parliament of Western Australia at a 1945 by-election for the seat of Electoral district of Greenough, Greenough. He served as a cabinet minister under Ross McLarty from 1949 to 1953 and replaced McLarty as leader of the Liberal Party in 1957. 1971 Western Australian State Election
Elections were held in the state of Western Australia on 20 February 1971 to elect all 51 members to the Legislative Assembly and 15 members to the 30-seat Legislative Council. The four-term Liberal- Country Party coalition government, led by Premier David Brand, was defeated by the Labor Party, led by Opposition Leader John Tonkin. This was the first election in which no seats were uncontested since the introduction of responsible government in 1890. This was partly due to the Democratic Labor Party deciding to contest every seat up for election in both Houses. There was a large increase in the number of electors, because this was the first election after 18 year olds had been given the vote.
