George Bowes (MP For County Durham)
Sir George Bowes (21 August 1701 – 17 September 1760) was an English coal proprietor and Whig politician who sat in the House of Commons for 33 years from 1727 to 1760. George Bowes was baptized on 4 September 1701, the youngest son of Sir William Bowes, MP, and Elizabeth Bowes (née Blakiston). The Bowes family had been prominent in County Durham, with their ownership of the estate and castle of Streatlam but in 1713, George's father acquired (from his wife's family) the Gibside estate which included some of the area's richest coal seams and led to the family becoming immensely wealthy through the coal trade. George Bowes inherited the family estates in 1721, including Gibside. Although he was the youngest son, his elder brothers had died young. In October 1724 he married the fourteen-year-old Eleanor Verney, but she died in December of that year. Her death was commemorated in a poem, written by Lady Mary Wortley Montagu. George Bowes (soldier)
Sir George Bowes (1527 – 20 August 1580) was an English military commander. Family George Bowes was the third but eldest surviving son of Richard Bowes (d. 10 November 1558) and Elizabeth Aske. He had four brothers, Ralph, Francis, Christopher and Robert Bowes, and seven sisters: Bridget, who married Thomas Hussey, esquire; Anne, who married Marmaduke Vincent, esquire; Muriel, who married John Jackson; Margery, who married the Scottish reformer John Knox; Elizabeth, who married George Bainbrigge; Margaret, who married firstly Thomas Middleton and secondly Ambrose Birkbeck; and Jane. Career At the age of fourteen he was married to Dorothy, daughter of Sir William Mallory of Studley Royal. He early went to the Scottish war, and in 1549 is mentioned as being in command of one hundred cavalry at Douglas. George Bowes (rebel)
Sir George Bowes (1517–1545) was an English commander in border warfare. He was knighted for his services during the Burning of Edinburgh (1544). Early life Bowes was the son of Sir Ralph Bowes of Dalden, Streatlam, and South Cowton, and Elizabeth, daughter of Henry Clifford, 10th Baron de Clifford. He married Muriel the daughter of Lord Eure. In the "Rough Wooing" From a young age, Bowes took part in border warfare against Scotland. At the start of the war of the Rough Wooing, he went with Lord Hertford and participated in the devastating raid on Edinburgh in 1544, and was knighted at Leith on 11 May. George Bowes (prospector)
George Bowes (died 1606) was an English prospector. He mined for gold in Scotland. Family background George was a son of George Bowes (soldier), Sir George Bowes of Streatlam Castle, Streatlam and Dorothy Mallory. He married Magdalen Bray, daughter of Sir Edward Bray.
