George Arents
George Arents Jr. (born 1875 - December 13, 1960) was an American businessman who directed the American Tobacco Company and was the treasurer for the American Machine and Foundry as well as the International Cigar Machinery. He was in one race, which was the 1904 Vanderbilt Cup Races where his Mercedes overturned, causing a serious head injury and Carl Mensel, his driving mechanic, to die. Early life Arents was born in 1875 to a wealthy family in America. His great uncle Lewis Ginter and father also named George Arents were founders of the Allen & Ginter, Allen & Ginter Tobacco Company, which later became the American Tobacco Company. His father died in 1918 leaving an estate of $10 million in which 1/3 went to his son George Arents III. He studied at Columbia University and received his master's degree from Syracuse University. American Tobacco Company
The American Tobacco Company was a tobacco company founded in 1890 by J. B. Duke through a merger between a number of U.S. tobacco manufacturers including Allen and Ginter, Goodwin & Company, and Kinney Brothers. The company was one of the original 12 members of the Dow Jones Industrial Average in 1896. Lewis Ginter (April 4, 1824 – October 2, 1897) was an American businessman, financier, military officer, real estate developer, and philanthropist based in Richmond, Virginia. Ginter acquired his fortune through his various business ventures and became one of Richmond's wealthiest citizens. While the Jefferson Hotel and Ginter Park embody some of Ginter's major urban contributions to Richmond, many of his philanthropic gifts were given anonymously to charitable organizations and individuals in need. Ginter served in the Confederacy, attaining the rank of major and also played a major role in bringing Richmond back from the ravages of the Civil War. Allen & Ginter was a Richmond, Virginia, tobacco manufacturing company formed by John F. Allen and Lewis Ginter around 1880. The firm created and marketed the first cigarette cards for collecting and trading in the United States.
