Georg Joseph Beer
Georg Joseph Beer (23 December 1763 – 11 April 1821) was an Austrian ophthalmologist. He is credited with introducing a flap operation for treatment of cataracts (Beer's operation), as well as popularizing the instrument used to perform the surgery (Beer's knife). Career Initially a theology student, in 1786 he earned his medical doctorate from the University of Vienna. Under the guidance of Joseph Barth (1745–1818), his primary focus turned to the field of ophthalmology. However, his professional relationship with Barth was never close, and he later referred to his years with Barth as his "years of torture" (Barth – mentor and tormentor). The final break in their relationship was caused by Barth's favour of Johann Adam Schmidt (1759–1809), who later became a renowned ophthalmologist. Christoph Friedrich Jäger Ritter von Jaxtthal (4 September 1784 – 25 December 1871) was an Austrian ophthalmologist who was a native of Kirchberg an der Jagst. Early life and education He studied medicine in Vienna and Landshut, and in 1809 became a physician in the Napoleonic Wars. He later returned to Vienna, where in 1812 he received his medical degree at the university. Career In Vienna he served as an assistant to ophthalmologist Georg Joseph Beer (1763–1821), who would become his future father-in-law. Francesco Flarer
Francesco Flarer (27 November 1791 – 22 December 1859) was an Italian ophthalmologist born near Merano, South Tyrol. He initially planned to study theology at Innsbruck, but instead enrolled to take classes in medicine, later relocating to the University of Landshut. Political turmoil made his stays at both institutions brief, and in 1809 transferred to the University of Pavia. In 1815 he received his degree in medicine, followed by a doctorate in surgery shortly afterwards. On advice from Antonio Scarpa (1752–1832), he studied ophthalmology in the clinic of Georg Joseph Beer (1763–1821) at the University of Vienna, where he obtained a degree in 1817. Following his return to Pavia, he worked as an assistant in the anatomy laboratory of Bartolomeo Panizza (1785–1867). Maximilian Joseph Von Chelius
Maximilian Joseph von Chelius (16 January 1794 – 17 August 1876) was a German surgeon and ophthalmologist born in Mannheim. Chelius received his medical doctorate in 1812 at the University of Heidelberg, and afterwards worked as both a civilian and military physician in Munich. He was an army surgeon in the last phases of the Napoleonic Wars (1814-15). In 1817 he became an associate professor of surgery in Heidelberg, where soon afterwards he gained a full professorship (1819). He was a catalyst in the development of the medical faculty at the University of Heidelberg, being considered the founder of the surgical tradition at the facility. Chelius specialized in the field of ophthalmic surgery. One of his better-known patients was composer Frédéric Chopin, whom Chelius treated for sepsis of the finger. Anton Von Rosas
Anton von Rosas (23 December 1791 – 31 May 1855) was an Austrian ophthalmologist born in Pécs, Hungary. He studied medicine at the Universities of Pest and Vienna, earning his doctorate in 1814. He later became an assistant to Georg Joseph Beer (1763-1821) at the University Eye Clinic in Vienna, and from 1819 to 1821 was director of the ophthalmology clinic at the University of Padua. In 1821 he returned to Vienna as successor to the late Dr. Beer. From 1821 to 1853 he was professor of ophthalmology and director of the eye clinic at the University of Vienna. He is credited with making several improvements at the clinic, including establishment of a year-round ambulatory clinic. Among his written works was a three volume ophthalmological textbook titled ''Handbuch der theoretischen und practischen Augenheilkunde''. Konrad Johann Martin Langenbeck
Konrad Johann Martin Langenbeck (5 December 1776 – 24 January 1851) was a German surgeon, ophthalmologist and anatomist who was a native of Horneburg. Biography Langenbeck studied medicine at Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, and in 1802 received his habilitation under August Gottlieb Richter (1742–1812) at University of Göttingen. In 1804 he became an associate professor, and three years later established his own institute for surgery and ophthalmology. In 1814 he was appointed full professor at Göttingen and general surgeon of the Hannoverian Army. For nearly fifty years he taught classes at the University of Göttingen, and among his better known students were surgeon Louis Stromeyer (1804–1876) and his nephew Bernhard von Langenbeck (1810–1887). He was considered one of the better surgeons during the first half of the 19th century, known for his speed and precision involving amputations.
