Geoffrey Oryema
Geoffrey Oryema (16 April 1953 – 22 June 2018) was a Ugandan musician. In 1977 after the murder of his father, Erinayo Wilson Oryema, who was a cabinet minister in the government of Idi Amin, he began his life in exile. At the age of 24, and at the height of Amin's power, Oryema was smuggled out of the country in the trunk of a car. He sang in the languages of his youth, Swahili language, Swahili and Acholi language, Acholi, the languages of his lost country, the "clear green land" of Uganda, and he also sang in English language, English and French language, French. Oryema earned his international reputation on the release of his second album, ''Beat the Border''. He had collaborated with Peter Gabriel, Brian Eno and others, and was backed by French musicians including Jean-Pierre Alarcen (guitar) and Patrick Buchmann (drums, percussion, backing vocals), touring with WOMAD in Australia, the USA, Japan, Brazil and Europe. Soroti
Soroti is a city in Eastern Region, Uganda, Eastern Region of Uganda. It is the main city, commercial, and administrative center in Soroti District, one of the nine administrative districts in the Teso sub-region. Soroti city was immediately approved for operationalization ahead of schedule by the Parliament of Uganda in the Financial Year 2020/2021. ''Exile'' is the debut album by the Ugandan musician Geoffrey Oryema. It was released in 1990. The album has sold more than 50,000 copies. Oryema escaped his country after his father was assassinated during the rule of Idi Amin, as chronicled in "Solitude". Many of the songs contain nostalgia about the land and the people Oryema had to leave. Production The album was produced by Brian Eno, with Eno and Peter Gabriel providing backing vocals on some songs. It was engineered by David Bottrill. Oryema played the lukeme, among other instruments. He sang in Acoli, English, and Swahili. The title track calls for an end to tribal fighting in Africa.
