Arthur Cumming (skater)
Arthur Warren Jack Cumming (8 May 1889 – 9 May 1914) was a Great Britain, British Figure skating, figure skater. He came in second of the three participants in the special figures event at the 1908 Summer Olympics, earning him a silver medal. This was the only year in which special figures was an Olympic event. Cumming also participated in pair skating with partner Mrs. Arthur Cadogan. They placed 7th at the World Figure Skating Championships, World Championships in 1912 and 1913. Cumming was involved in a motorcycle accident in May 1914 after which he contracted tetanus and died. 1908 Summer Olympics
The 1908 Summer Olympics (officially the Games of the IV Olympiad and also known as London 1908) were an international multi-sport event held in London, England, from 27 April to 31 October 1908. The 1908 Games were originally scheduled to be held in Rome, but were relocated on financial grounds following the violent eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 1906, which claimed over 100 lives; Rome eventually hosted the Games in 1960. These were the fourth chronological modern Summer Olympics in keeping with the now-accepted four-year cycle as opposed to the alternate four-year cycle of the proposed Intercalated Games. The IOC president for these Games was Baron Pierre de Coubertin. Lasting a total of 187 days (six months and four days), these were the longest Games in modern Olympics history. Special Figures
Special figures were a component of figure skating in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Like compulsory figures, special figures involved tracing patterns on the ice with the blade of one ice skate. This required the skater to display significant balance and control while skating on one foot. While compulsory figures were standard patterns derived from the figure 8, the special figures were elaborate patterns of the skaters' own invention. These designs included rosettes, stars, crosses, and other elaborate curlicues. The building blocks for special figures included not only the elements of the standard compulsory figures, but shapes known as beaks, spectacles, and cross-cuts. Tracing of elaborate patterns on the ice was a characteristic of the American and British schools of figure skating.
