Geoffrey Martin (footballer)
Geoffrey Bernard "Paddy" Martin (16 July 1927 – 12 June 2020) was an Australian rules footballer who played in Tasmania with Launceston, Sandy Bay, Ulverstone and Burnie. He was a half back flanker in Launceston's official 'Team of the Century' and in 2005 was inducted into Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame as a coaching legend. Martin also represented Tasmania once in first-class cricket. Martin was born in Launceston, Tasmania. He made an immediate impression on his debut for Launceston in 1946, and was selected that year to play with the Northern Tasmanian Football Association's representative team. The following season he crossed to Sandy Bay but returned to Launceston in 1948 where he stayed until 1954, despite getting an offer to go to Victorian Football League club Melbourne. Geoffrey Martin (9 March 1940 – 6 November 2021) was an English footballer who scored 41 goals from 295 appearances in the Football League playing as a left winger for Chesterfield (in two spells), Darlington, Carlisle United, Workington and Grimsby Town. He was on the books of Leeds United, but his only appearance was in the League Cup. He won the Fourth Division championship with Chesterfield in the 1969–70 season, after which he retired. Geoffrey Haward Martin (27 September 1928 – 20 December 2007) was a British academic, historian, and from 1982 to 1988 Keeper of Public Records of the UK. Early life Geoffrey Haward Martin was born in Essex on 27 September 1928. He was educated at Colchester Royal Grammar School, where he published a history of the school in the school magazine, ''The Colcestrian'', before reprinting it as a separate volume with additions and corrections, ''The History of Colchester Royal Grammar School (1539–1947)'', published by the Borough of Colchester. In 1947 he went to Merton College, Oxford, to read history, specialising in Richard II of England, Richard II and John of Gaunt. Soon afterwards he published his DPhil on the medieval history of Ipswich. Geoffrey Almeric Thorndike Martin (28 May 1934 – 7 March 2022) was a British egyptologist, Edwards Professor of Egyptian Archaeology and Philology Emeritus, University College, London, Joint Field Director of the Amarna Royal Tombs Project and fellow commoner of Christ's College, Cambridge. Biography Martin was born in South Ockendon on 28 May 1934. He attended school at Aveley and then Palmer's School in Grays in Essex. Martin received a BA in Ancient History from University College London in 1963. He has the degrees of MA, PhD and Litt. D from Cambridge University and was Budge Research Fellow in Egyptology at Christ's College, Cambridge from 1964 to 1970. After leaving Christ's College Martin became Lecturer in Egyptology at University College London, Reader from 1978 and Edwards Professor of Egyptian Archaeology and Philology from 1988 until retirement in 1993. Thomas Geoffrey Martin OBE (born 26 July 1940) is a politician from Northern Ireland and the longest-serving head of the Representation of the European Commission in the United Kingdom. He led the offices in London, Belfast, Cardiff and Edinburgh during the years from the completion of the Single Market until after the Maastricht Treaty was ratified (1993–2003). He was appointed an the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2002 New Year Honours. Early life and education Martin was born in the Irish border town of Newry and lived in and around the townland of Mullaghglass and the linen village of Bessbrook in South Armagh until his late teens.
