Geoff Apps
Geoffrey Cleland Apps (born London, England, 1949) is an English pioneer of all-terrain bicycles. Beginnings Geoff Apps' family moved near the Chiltern Hills north-west of London, where he cycled in the woods. He took up motorcycle observed trials riding but was unhappy with the noise and disturbance. He began modifying conventional bicycles for off-road use in 1965. By 1979 he had designed and created a lightweight bicycle for the wet mud of south-east England that used 650Bx54 Nokia Hakkapeliitta snow tyres from Finland. Apps set up Cleland Cycles Ltd to manufacture copies of his Aventura design in 1982 and these were sold under Apps' Cleland Cycles brand until 1984. Mountain biking is a sport of riding bicycles off-road, often over rough terrain, usually using specially designed mountain bikes. Nicholas Crane (born 6 May 1954) is an English geographer, explorer, writer and broadcaster. Since 2004 he has written and presented four television series for BBC Two: '' Coast'', ''Great British Journeys'', ''Map Man'' and '' Town''. Early life and education Crane was born in Hastings, East Sussex, but grew up in Norfolk. He attended Wymondham College from 1967 until 1972, then Cambridgeshire College of Arts & Technology (CCAT), a forerunner to Anglia Ruskin University, where he studied Geography. In his youth he went camping and hiking with his father and explored Norfolk by bicycle, which gave him his enthusiasm for exploration. Chiltern Hills
The Chiltern Hills is a chalk escarpment in England. The area, northwest of London, covers stretching from Goring-on-Thames in the southwest to Hitchin in the northeast - across Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, and Bedfordshire. Charlie Kelly (businessman)
Charles Richard Kelly (born 1945) was an early pioneer in the development of modern mountain bicycles. Life Kelly attended Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley, California, at the foot of Mount Tamalpais. During the late sixties and early seventies Kelly was a roadie for a San Francisco rock band, The Sons of Champlin. When the band broke up in 1977, Kelly turned his attention to his passion for bicycling and "klunker" bikes he and his friends were constructing from old frames and taking off-road. *In 1972 Kelly was a founding member and later president of Velo-Club Tamalpais, a bicycle club whose membership included most of the early Marin County mountain bike pioneers. *In 1976 he started promoting the Repack downhill race, the first great mountain bike event.
