Gent–Wevelgem U23
The Gent–Wevelgem U23 / Kattekoers-Ieper is a European single day cycle race held in the Belgian region of Flanders. As of 2011, the race is organized as a 1.2 event on the UCI Europe Tour. The race is considered to be the under-23 version of the Gent–Wevelgem classic. The Kattekoers was created in 1934, initially as ''The three belfry cities''. The race started in Ghent, passed Bruges and ended in Ypres, three cities which have a belfry, hence the name. More recently, the starting location has been changed to Deinze instead of Ghent. Beveren () is a former municipality in the Belgian province of East Flanders which comprises the towns of Beveren, Doel, Haasdonk, Kallo, Kieldrecht, Melsele, Verrebroek and Vrasene. The port of the Waasland (Dutch: ''Waaslandhaven'') is in Beveren, on the left bank of the Schelde, facing the port of Antwerp on the other side of the river. Belfry Of Ghent
The Belfry of Ghent () is one of three medieval towers that overlook the old city centre of Ghent, Belgium; the other two belonging to Saint Bavo's Cathedral and Saint Nicholas' Church. Its height of makes it the tallest belfry in Belgium. The belfry of Ghent, together with its attached buildings, belongs to the set of Belfries of Belgium and France, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Construction history Construction of the tower began in 1313 after a design by master mason Jan van Haelst. His plans are still preserved in the Ghent City Museum. After continuing intermittently through wars, plagues and political turmoil, the work reached completion in 1380. It was near the end of this period that the gilded dragon, brought from Bruges, assumed its place atop the tower. The Belfry of Bruges () is a Middle Ages, medieval bell tower in the centre of Bruges, Belgium. One of the city's most prominent symbols, the belfry formerly housed a treasury and the municipal archives and served as an observation post for spotting fires and other dangers. History The belfry was added to the Markt, Bruges, Markt (market square) around 1240, when Bruges was an important centre of the County of Flanders, Flemish cloth industry. After a devastating fire in 1280, the upper half of the tower was largely rebuilt. The city archives, however, were forever lost to the flames. The octagonal upper stage of the belfry was added between 1483 and 1487, and capped with a wooden spire bearing an image of Michael (archangel), Saint Michael, banner in hand and dragon underfoot.
