Genoa Area High School
Genoa Area High School is a public high school in Genoa, Ohio, United States. It is the only high school in the Genoa Area Local School District. Other towns in the district are Curtice, Clay Center, Martin, and Williston. The nickname for the athletic teams is the Comets. Genoa became a charter member of the Northern Buckeye Conference in 2011. It was a charter member of the Suburban Lakes League in 1972, the Northern Lakes League in 1956 and the Sandusky Bay Conference in 1948. There is one K-5 elementary school in the Genoa Area School District, Genoa Area Local Elementary School. This school was opened in the 2011–2012 school year replacing former elementary schools Brunner Elementary and Allen Central Elementary. Allen was closed and razed following the 2010–2011 school year while Brunner was closed and sold off. Genoa Area Local School District is a school district in Northwest Ohio. The school district has an open enrollment policy which allows students who live outside the district's borders to attend; however, the school primarily serves students who live in the city and townships of Genoa, Allen Twp., and Clay Twp. located in Ottawa County. The Northern Buckeye Conference (NBC) is an OHSAA high school athletic conference that began athletic competition in 2011 with 8 high schools from Northwest Ohio's Ottawa and Wood counties as members. The idea for the league was born in spring 2009 when the Suburban Lakes League was unable to gather enough votes among member schools to make former Northern Lakes League member Rossford its eighth member as a replacement for Lakota. The SLL principals created a plan for a 12-team, two-division league upon the request of Eastwood's superintendent, and voted 6–0–1 to begin contacting schools to invite them into this league. Shortly after, the idea for expansion was dropped when the seven members could not agree on which schools to approve extending membership to. Genoa, Ohio
Genoa is a village in Ottawa County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,336 at the 2010 census. Originally settled as Stony Ridge, it took its present name in 1856 and was incorporated as a village on December 10, 1868. Early History In 1835, Timothy and Cinderella Sherman, with their two-year-old son Phillip, became the first people of European descent to settle in what is now Clay Township. Other settlers sprinkled into the Great Black Swamp and the area became known as Stony Ridge, likely due to the limestone bedrock sticking out of the ground and swamp. Ultimately the town owes its existence to a cost-saving decision by the executives of the Toledo, Norwalk, and Cleveland Railroad. The Suburban Lakes League (SLL) was an OHSAA athletic league with 7 member schools located in northwest Ohio. The league was formed in 1972 by former members of the Northern Lakes League, Sandusky Bay Conference, and the Lakeshore Conference. The Northern Lakes League (NLL), is an OHSAA high school athletic conference that was formed in 1956 and comprises eight high schools in Northwest Ohio. Sandusky Bay Conference
The Sandusky Bay Conference is a high school athletic conference in the Sandusky Bay area of north central Ohio. It is affiliated with the Ohio High School Athletic Association. Members The SBC has 22 full members schools located within Erie, Huron, Ottawa, Sandusky, & Seneca counties. The schools range in size from Division 3 to Division 7. Chris Bassitt
Christopher M. Bassitt (born February 22, 1989) is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays of Major League Baseball (MLB). He made his MLB debut with the Chicago White Sox in 2014 and played for the Oakland Athletics from 2015 to 2021 and New York Mets in 2022. Michael Deiter (born September 3, 1996) is an American football center for the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Wisconsin, and was drafted by the Dolphins in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Early years Deiter attended Genoa Area High School in Genoa, Ohio.
