Alexander Nelson (British Army Officer)
Lieutenant-General Sir Alexander Abercromby Nelson (30 June 1814 – 28 September 1893) was a British Army officer who became Lieutenant Governor of Guernsey. Military career Educated at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Nelson was commissioned into the 40th Regiment of Foot as an ensign in 1835. He served in Kandahar and in Afghanistan in 1841 and 1842 and took part in the Battle of Hyderabad in 1843 during the Conquest of Sindh. He was appointed Deputy Assistant Adjutant-General at Portsmouth in 1854 and subsequently became brigade major there before being made Deputy Adjutant-General in Jamaica in 1864. He was responsible for putting down the Morant Bay rebellion there, ordering the trial of George Gordon who was subsequently hanged in 1865. He went on to be Assistant Adjutant-General for Cork district in 1867 and Adjutant-General in Gibraltar in 1873. Allison Nelson
Allison Nelson (March 11, 1822 – October 7, 1862) was the ninth mayor of Atlanta, serving from January until July 1855, when he resigned from office. He died of disease in Prairie County (present-day Lonoke County), Arkansas, during the American Civil War. Early life His father, John B. Nelson, was an early DeKalb County settler who operated Nelson's Ferry across the Chattahoochee River until murdered by John W. Davis in 1825. Political career In a close election for mayor, Nelson, running as a Democrat, defeated the Know Nothing candidate, Ira O. McDaniel, but resigned in July when the city council reduced a fine he had levied on two young men for destroying city property, thus leaving John Glen as the acting mayor. Nelson left for Kansas during the border disputes, then moved to Meridian, Texas, where he was involved with Indian affairs, serving under Lawrence S. Major General Sir Eustace John Blois Nelson KCVO CB DSO OBE MC (15 June 1912 – 23 December 1993) was a senior British Army officer who commanded the 3rd Battalion, Grenadier Guards during the Second World War and later served as Commandant of the British Sector in Berlin. Military career Nelson was born in Hertfordshire, the son of barrister Roland Nelson and Hyla Letitia Grace, sixth daughter of Sir John Ralph Blois, 8th Baronet. Patrick Henry Nelson (July 26, 1824 – June 24, 1864) was a Confederate States Army officer and militia general from South Carolina during the American Civil War. Biography Patrick Henry Nelson was born in Clarendon County, South Carolina to Samuel Edgar Nelson and Amarintha Carson McCaulay. He graduated from the University of South Carolina, South Carolina College as a member of the class of 1844. Later he married Emma Sarah Cantey (daughter of General James Willis Cantey, cousin to General James Cantey, and great granddaughter of General Richard Richardson (general)), and had three children (including Patrick Henry Nelson II). Roger Nelson (1759 – June 7, 1815) was an American soldier and politician who represented the fourth district of Maryland in the United States House of Representatives from 1804 to 1810. Early life Nelson was born on "Point of Rocks" plantation, near Frederick, Maryland. He was the son of Arthur Nelson (d. 1792). He completed preparatory studies, and attended the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. Career He served in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War and was wounded at the Battle of Camden and again at the Battle of Guilford Court House. Nelson was admitted as an original member of The Society of the Cincinnati in the state of Maryland and later attained the rank of brigadier general. William "Bull" Nelson (September 27, 1824 – September 29, 1862) was a United States naval officer who became a Union general during the American Civil War. As a Kentuckian, Nelson could have sympathized with the Confederates but, like his state, he remained loyal to the United States of America. Secretary of Treasury Salmon P. Chase believed Nelson's actions had kept Kentucky loyal and promoted him to brigadier general in September 1861. Nelson's 4th Division bore the brunt of heavy fighting at the Battle of Shiloh and took part in the Siege of Corinth; he was the first man to enter the town.
