Gene Smith (born December 31, 1963) is an American football executive who served as the general manager of the Jacksonville Jaguars of the National Football League (NFL) from 2009 to 2012. Early life and college Smith was born in Willard, Ohio. He attended Heidelberg College, serving as a captain of the football team while playing as a defensive lineman. From 1986 to 1988, Smith worked at Ohio University as a graduate assistant and later served as an assistant coach. Gene Smith is a former American college administrator and former college football player and coach who was most recently senior vice president and Athletic Director for Ohio State University. He was named the university's eighth athletic director on March 5, 2005. Prior to his tenure at Ohio State, he served as athletic director for Arizona State, Eastern Michigan, and Iowa State. Early life/playing and coaching career A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Smith played defensive end for four years at Notre Dame including the 1973 Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team that won the AP National Championship. He graduated from Notre Dame in 1977, becoming the first member of his family to graduate from college. In biology, the word gene has two meanings. The Mendelian gene is a basic unit of heredity. The molecular gene is a sequence of nucleotides in DNA that is transcribed to produce a functional RNA. There are two types of molecular genes: protein-coding genes and non-coding genes. Ray Gene Smith (November 27, 1928 – August 16, 2005) was an American professional football defensive back who played four seasons with the Chicago Bears of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Cameron State Agricultural College and Hardin College. Early life and college Ray Gene Smith was born on November 27, 1928, in Anadarko, Oklahoma. He attended Lawton High School in Lawton, Oklahoma. Smith first played college football at Cameron State Agricultural College.
