Gen. Isaac Peace Rodman House
The Gen. Isaac Peace Rodman House is an historic house in South Kingstown, Rhode Island. It is a -story granite structure built in 1855 by Isaac P. Rodman, a prominent politician and businessman who served as a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. In addition to its association with Rodman, the house is notable as an excellent early Italianate design based on the published works of Andrew Jackson Downing, and its attractively landscaped grounds. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. South Kingstown, Rhode Island
South Kingstown is a town in, and the county seat of, Washington County, Rhode Island, United States. The population was 31,931 at the 2020 census. South Kingstown is the second largest town in Rhode Island by total geographic area, behind New Shoreham, and the third largest town in Rhode Island by geographic land area, behind Exeter and Coventry. History The Narragansett Indians were known to occupy a winter camp in the Great Swamp, within present day South Kingstown. In March of 1638, Rhode Island founder Roger Williams signed an agreement with two Sachems of the Narragansett Tribe, Canonicus and Miantonomoh, establishing the boundaries between the Narragansett Tribe and the Colony of Rhode Island, as well as to purchase Aquidneck Island. The agreement was signed at Pettaquamscutt Rock, which is now a part of South Kingstown. Isaac Peace Rodman
Isaac Peace Rodman (August 18, 1822 – September 30, 1862) was a Rhode Island banker, politician, and a Union Army brigadier general in the American Civil War, who became mortally wounded at the Battle of Antietam. Early life and career Isaac Peace Rodman was born in South Kingstown, Rhode Island the son of Samuel Rodman and Mary Peckham. He was married to Sally Lyman Arnold, daughter of Rhode Island Governor Lemuel Hastings Arnold. His brother-in-law was future Civil War general Richard Arnold. He entered into a partnership with his brother Rowland Gibson Rodman and his father Samuel Rodman, under the name S. Rodman & Sons. Isaac Rodman was for many years president of the town council of South Kingstown, a representative for several terms in the Rhode Island General Assembly, in the Rhode Island Senate. Andrew Jackson Downing (October 31, 1815 – July 28, 1852) was an American landscape designer, horticulturist, and writer, a prominent advocate of the Gothic Revival in the United States, and editor of ''The Horticulturist'' magazine (1846–52). Downing is considered to be a founder of American landscape architecture. Early life Downing was born in Newburgh, New York, to Samuel Downing, a wheelwright and later nurseryman, and Eunice Bridge. After finishing his schooling at sixteen, he worked in his father's nursery in the Town of Newburgh, and gradually became interested in landscape gardening and architecture. The Italianate style was a distinct 19th-century phase in the history of Classical architecture.
