Gembrook is a town in Victoria, Australia, situated south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, within the Shire of Cardinia local government area. At the 2021 census, Gembrook recorded a population of 2,559. Nestled on the edge of the Dandenong Ranges, Gembrook is a popular day-trip and weekend destination for Melburnians, offering a scenic retreat less than 1.5 hours’ drive from the city. History Gembrook was settled in 1873 for farming and timber; the surrounding countryside was suitable for both dairy and orchards. Timber provided income while farms were established. The name Gembrook came from the small gems that were found in small creeks and watercourses in the surrounding area. The Post Office opened on 5 October 1877. Menzies Creek Railway Station
Menzies Creek railway station, formerly known as Aura railway station, is located on the Puffing Billy Railway in the town of the same name. History It was opened with the line on 18 December 1900. It was named after an early settler John Menzies. On 5 December 1904 it was renamed Aura, after the estate of the Shire President. The station reverted to its previous name on 4 July 1947. Throughout this period, the Post Office kept the name of the town as Menzies Creek which it remains to this day. When the station was operating under the Victorian Railways it had a loop siding, a standard portable station building, and a goods shed. Dandenong Ranges
The Dandenong Ranges (commonly just the Dandenongs) are a set of low mountain ranges in Victoria, Australia, approximately east of the state capital Melbourne. A minor branch of the Great Dividing Range, the Dandenongs consist mostly of rolling hills, rising to at Mount Dandenong, as well as steeply weathered valleys and gullies covered in thick temperate rainforest, predominantly of tall mountain ash trees and dense ferny undergrowth. The namesake Dandenong Creek and most of its left-bank tributaries (particularly the Eumemmerring Creek) originate from headwaters in these mountain ranges. Two of Melbourne's most important storage reservoirs, the Cardinia and Silvan Reservoir, are also located within the Dandenongs.
