Geetha Johri
Geetha Johri is a retired officer of the Indian Police Service. She was the first woman from Gujarat to become an IPS officer. Johri retired as Gujarat’s police chief and was the highest ranked women officer in the state. She became DGP in 2017, replacing PP Pandey. Johri was the original investigator of the death of Sohrabuddin Sheikh. Jorhi graduated in the 1982 batch. In 1992 she raided the Dariapur hideout of criminal Abdul Latif. Latif escaped, but she arrested his gunman Sharif Khan. In 1998 she came into political conflict which resulted in her loss of opportunity. The Indian Police Service (IPS) is a civil service under the All India Services. PP Pandey
P.P. Pandey is a police officer in India. He was Director general of police (DGP) in Gujarat. Pandey was Joint Commissioner of Police in Ahmedabad when during the 2004 Ishrat Jahan case there were police encounters resulting in death. The Central Bureau of Investigation made an early determination that the deaths were undue and that there was some fault in the police. From April to August 2013 Pandey was away from public view. In August the Gujarat government suspended him from his post and jailed him. In February 2015 Pandey got bail after having been in jail for 18 months. A few days after getting bail the government revoked his suspension and returned him to service. In April 2016 Panday was appointed as Gujarat DGP. Death Of Sohrabuddin Sheikh
The Sohrabuddin Sheikh encounter case is a criminal case in the Gujarat state after the death of Sohrabuddin Anwarhussain Sheikh on November 26, 2005. A special CBI court acquitted all the 22 accused in the case in the alleged fake encounter of Sohrabuddin Sheikh and his wife. Apart from being involved in the criminal extortion racket in Gujarat, Sheikh was also involved in arms smuggling in Madhya Pradesh, and also had murder cases registered against him in Gujarat and Rajasthan. Sheikh was also claimed by the police to be associated with the banned global terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba and the Pakistani intelligence agency Inter-Services Intelligence, and was alleged to have planned to create communal chaos in the state by assassinating "an important political leader". Abdul Latif (criminal)
Abdul Latif Khan (24 October 1951 – 29 November 1997) was an underworld don and terrorist from the Gujarat state of India. He was also an associate of Dawood Ibrahim. He was based in Ahmedabad and was politically well connected. He used to wait on tables in gambling dens where he started serving liquor as a teenager. He became a bootlegger and eventually monopolised the illegal liquor business in Gujarat. Latif was wanted for over 100 cases of murder, contract killing, extortion, rioting, kidnappings, smuggling, bootlegging and was also wanted in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case. There were 243 cases against his gang including 64 murders and 14 kidnappings. The incident that highlighted Latif was the "Odhav Shootout". The 2002 Gujarat riots, also known as the 2002 Gujarat violence or the Gujarat pogrom, was a three-day period of inter-communal violence in the western Indian state of Gujarat. The Godhra train burning, burning of a train in Godhra on 27 February 2002, which caused the deaths of 58 Hindu pilgrims and karsevaks returning from Ayodhya, is cited as having instigated the violence.
