Charles Cashel Gavan Duffy (27 August 1855 – 23 February 1932) was an Australian public servant. He served as the first permanent clerk of the Australian House of Representatives from 1901 to 1917 and then clerk of the Australian Senate from 1917 to 1920. Early life Gavan Duffy was born on 27 August 1855 in Blackrock, Dublin, Ireland. He was the son of Susan (née Hughes) and Charles Gavan Duffy, a prominent Irish politician. His siblings and half-siblings included John, Frank, Louise and George. Gavan Duffy's parents moved to Australia in 1856, where his father continued his political career and briefly served as premier of Victoria in the early 1870s. He was sent to England in 1865 to attend Stonyhurst, later returning to Australia where he completed his secondary education at St Patrick's College, East Melbourne. Sir Charles Gavan Duffy, KCMG, PC (12 April 1816 – 9 February 1903), was an Irish poet and journalist (editor of ''The Nation''), Young Irelander and tenant-rights activist. After emigrating to Australia in 1856 he entered the politics of Victoria on a platform of land reform, and in 1871–1872 served as the colony's 8th Premier. Ireland Early life and career Duffy was born at No. 10 Dublin Street in Monaghan Town, County Monaghan, Ireland, the son of a Catholic shopkeeper. He was educated in Belfast at St Malachy's College and in the collegiate department of the Royal Belfast Academical Institution where he studied logic, rhetoric and ''belles-lettres''. Charles Gavan Duffy (November 2, 1874 – March 14, 1958) was a lawyer, judge and political figure on Prince Edward Island. He represented 5th Queens in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1920 to 1923 as a Liberal and served as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island. He was born in Kinkora, Prince Edward Island, the son of James Duffy and Elizabeth Smith. After completing high school in 1891, Duffy attended Prince of Wales College and earned his teaching licence. After teaching school in Tracadie and Tignish, Duffy returned to school, attending Saint Dunstan's College. Duffy articled with Walter Morson and was called to the bar in 1903. The firm later came to be known as Morson and Duffy. Duffy was named King's Counsel in 1921. Duffy was an unsuccessful candidate for a seat in the provincial assembly in 1915. USS ''Duffy'' (DE-27) was an that served in the Pacific during World War II. Namesake Charles John Duffy was born 31 December 1919 in New York City. He enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve on 25 April 1941 and was appointed an aviation cadet on 13 November 1941. Flying a carrier aircraft. Ensign Duffy was killed in action during the Naval Battle of Casablanca, French Morocco, 8 November 1942 during the Allied landings in North Africa. Construction and commissioning ''Duffy'' was launched from the Mare Island Navy Yard on 16 April 1943, and was originally intended for transfer to the British Royal Navy. Instead, she was commissioned by the U.S. Navy on 5 August 1943. Charles Lee Duffy (born May 10, 1976) is an American serial killer and rapist who murdered three women in the metro Atlanta area between June and August 1997. Within days of the final murder, Duffy was turned in by his mother, who had recognized him after surveillance images of the killer were broadcast. He subsequently pleaded guilty and received two life sentences without parole. Early life Duffy was born on May 10, 1976, in Norcross, Georgia. Murders On June 24, 1997 40-year-old Priscilla Culberson was reported missing after she failed to show up for work.
