Gaura Devi
Gaura Devi (1925 – 1991) was a grassroots activist and a rural women community leader from India who played an important role in the Chipko movement. Life Gaura Devi was born in 1925 in a village named Lata in the state of Uttarakhand. Chamoli District
Chamoli district is a district of the Uttarakhand state of India. It is bounded by the Tibet region to the north, and by the Uttarakhand districts of Pithoragarh and Bageshwar to the east, Almora to the south, Pauri Garhwal to the southwest, Rudraprayag to the west, and Uttarkashi to the northwest. The administrative headquarters of Chamoli district is in Gopeshwar. Chamoli hosts a variety of destinations of pilgrim and tourist interest including Badrinath, Hemkund Sahib and Valley of Flowers. Chipko Movement
The Chipko movement ( hi, chipko andolan, italic=yes, lit= reehugging movement) is a forest conservation movement in India. The movement originated in 1973 at the Himalayan region of Uttarakhand (then part of Uttar Pradesh) and went on to become a rallying point for many future environmental movements all over the world by Sunderlal Bahuguna. It created a precedent for starting nonviolent protest in India. However, it was Sunderlal Bahuguna, a Gandhian activist, who gave the movement a proper direction and its success meant that the world immediately took notice of this non-violent movement, which was to inspire in time many similar eco-groups to help slow down rapid deforestation, expose vested interests, increase social awareness and the need to save trees, increase ecological awareness, and demonstrate the viability of people power. Rini, Uttarakhand
Rini ( Garhwali : Raini and Reni) is a village in Chamoli district in Uttarakhand, north India. Rini is located on the river banks at the confluence of Rishi Ganga and Dhauli Ganga rivers. Location Rini is on the southern embankment of the Rishi Ganga and Dhauli Ganga gorge, directly at the northwestern edge of Nanda Devi National Park. Traffic connection is via the Joshimath-Malari Road, next localities are Tapovan to the west and Lata to the east. History The 1973 Chipko movement for forest conservation started in Rini. On 7 February 2021, Rini was severely struck during the 2021 Uttarakhand flood. The flood supposedly emerged from or near Nanda Devi glacier and ran downstream the Rishi Ganga gorge, destroying the Rishi Ganga Dam and power plant, before hitting the village. Alaknanda River
The Alaknanda is a Himalayan river in the Indian state of Uttarakhand and one of the two headstreams of the Ganges, the major river of Northern India and the holy river of Hinduism. In hydrology, the Alaknanda is considered the source stream of the Ganges on account of its greater length and discharge; however, in Hindu tradition and culture, the other headstream, the Bhagirathi, is considered the source stream.
