Gasoline Alley (radio)
''Gasoline Alley'' was an American radio sitcom based on the popularity of the newspaper comic strip ''Gasoline Alley'' by Frank King. It first aired in 1931 under the name "Uncle Walt and Skeezix". On February 17, 1941 the show returned on NBC Radio under the name "Gasoline Alley", with almost the same cast. Unusual at the time, it was a literal transfer of the storyline that had appeared in the comics pages that very same morning. It ran on NBC until April 11, 1941, and then switched to NBC's Blue Network on April 28, 1941. It ended its run on May 9, 1941. The syndicated series of 1948–49 featured a cast of Bill Lipton, Mason Adams and Robert Dryden. Sponsored by Autolite, the program used opening theme music by the Polka Dots, a harmonica group. The 15-minute episodes focused on Skeezix running a gas station and garage, the Wallet and Bobble Garage, with his partner, Wilmer Bobble. The Blue Network (previously known as the NBC Blue Network) was the on-air name of a now defunct American radio network, which broadcast from 1927 through 1945. Beginning as one of the two radio networks owned by the National Broadcasting Company (NBC), the independent Blue Network was born of a divestiture in 1942, arising from antitrust litigation. Jimmy McCallion
James McCallion (27 September 1918 – 11 July 1991) was an Irish-American character actor whose career spanned more than five decades across film, television, radio, and theater. Known for his youthful start and wide range of supporting roles, he appeared in numerous stage productions, classic films, and popular television series. Early life James McCallion was born in Derry, Ireland, and immigrated to the United States as a child. He began acting at the age of seven. Junius Matthews
Junius Conyers Matthews (June 12, 1890 – January 18, 1978) was an American actor in films, theater, radio and television. He was the voice of Archimedes the Owl in Disney's '' The Sword in the Stone'' in 1963. He was also the original voice of Rabbit in the '' Winnie the Pooh'' franchise from 1966 to 1977. Janice Gilbert ( 1920 - 1992) was an American child actress on radio and a game-show personality on television who became an expert on bridge. Early years Gilbert was born Janice Wolfe in New York City 1920. Her father was Eddie Wolfe, and her uncle was composer L. Wolfe Gilbert. She and her family moved to Sebring, Florida, soon after her birth, and they moved back to the northern United States when she was years old. Bill Idelson (August 21, 1919 – December 31, 2007) was an American actor, writer, director and producer widely known for his teenage role as Rush Gook on the radio comedy '' Vic and Sade'' and his recurring television role as Herman Glimscher on ''The Dick Van Dyke Show'' in the 1960s. Background Idelson was born in Forest Park, Illinois, his parents were Russian immigrants. He joined the U.S. Navy in World War II and was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross and four Air Medals as a night fighter pilot. He later married actress Seemah Wilder with whom he had three sons, Paul, Howie and Jonathan as well as a daughter, TV writer and actress Ellen Idelson, who died in 2003.
