Gary Pilgrim
Gary Pilgrim (born in Nowata, Oklahoma) is a retired investment manager and a founding partner of Pilgrim, Baxter, Hoyt & Greig, later known as Pilgrim Baxter & Associates. He is best known for his management of the PBHG Growth Fund, one of the most popular growth-style mutual funds of the mid- to late-1990s,and the market-timing scandal associated with that firm's downfall. Investing style Pilgrim is considered an innovator in growth stock investing. Early in his career, he developed an aggressive style which utilized an unusually systematic method of identifying small, rapidly growing companies with the potential to beat quarterly earnings expectations, which would result in sharp upward movement of their stock price. Nowata, Oklahoma
Nowata (Lenape: ', ' ) is a city in and the county seat of Nowata County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 3,731 at the 2010 United States census, a 6.0 percent decline from the figure of 3,971 recorded in 2000. The area where it was established was then part of the Cherokee Nation in Indian Territory. History The first community established at this site was named Metz, named for its first postmaster, Fred Metzner. The name was changed even before the railroad was built in 1889. In the Cherokee language, the town is called ᎠᎹᏗᎧᏂᎬᎬ (''A-ma-di-ka-ni-gunh-gunh'', roughly), which means, "water is all gone," translating what it ''sounded'' like the word meant: No Water. In 1889, the Kansas and Arkansas Valley Railway (later part of the Missouri Pacific Railway) built a line through Nowata. A post office was established in the town on November 8, 1889. 2003 Mutual Fund Scandal
The 2003 mutual fund scandal was the result of the discovery of illegal late trading and market timing practices on the part of certain hedge fund and mutual fund companies. Spitzer investigation On September 3, 2003, New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer announced the issuance of a complaint against New Jersey hedge fund company Canary Capital Partners LLC, charging that they had engaged in "late trading" in collusion with Bank of America's Nations Funds. Bank of America is charged with permitting Canary to purchase mutual fund shares, after the markets had closed, at the closing price for that day. Market timing is the strategy of making buying or selling decisions of financial assets (often stocks) by attempting to predict future market price movements (market trends).
