Gary Butler (linebacker)
Gary Butler (born November 13, 1984) is an American former professional football player who was a linebacker in the National Football League (NFL), the Canadian Football League (CFL), and the Arena Football League (AFL). He was signed by the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent in 2008. He played college football for the California Vulcans. Professional career BC Lions Butler signed with the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League in May 2009 and appeared in the first eight 2009 BC Lions season regular games before being released on September 1, 2009. Pittsburgh Power Butler played in 2011 and 2013 for the AFL's Pittsburgh Power. Linebacker (LB) is a playing position in gridiron football. Linebackers are members of the defensive team, and typically line up three to five yards behind the line of scrimmage and so back up the defensive linemen. They play closer to the line of scrimmage than the defensive backs (secondary). As such, linebackers play a hybrid role and are often the most versatile players on the defensive side of the ball; they can be asked to play roles similar to either a defensive lineman (such as stopping the runner on a running play) or a defensive back (such as dropping back into pass coverage). 2009 BC Lions Season
The 2009 BC Lions season was the 52nd season for the team in the Canadian Football League and their 56th overall. The Lions finished the season in fourth place in the West Division with a disappointing 8–10 record after losing their last three regular season games. While it was their first losing record since 2001, they still managed to play in the East-Semi Final playoff game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats after that same team eliminated the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the last game of the season.
