Robert Garside
Robert Garside (born 6 January 1967), calling himself The Runningman, is a British runner who is credited by Guinness World Records as the first person to run around the world. Garside began his record-setting run following two aborted attempts from Cape Town, South Africa and London, England. Garside set off from New Delhi, India on 20 October 1997, completing his run back at the same point on 13 June 2003. While his run has been challenged by some ultra distance runners and some members of the press, subsequent publications clarified a number of the points raised, such as anomalies in his online diary, and his running of the Nullarbor plain without a support crew – a feat believed impossible according to classic ultrarunning methodologies but achieved using lateral thinking and relying upon passing traffic and local people to drop off water for him instead – and highlighted the clashes of personality, running approach, and actions, that had engendered the concerns. Katrina Jane Garside (born 8 July 1968) is an English singer, songwriter, visual artist, and poet. She is known for her dynamic musical projects, which have ranged in style from noise rock to acoustic folk-influenced, and featured vocals ranging from childlike whispers to harsh scream singing. The daughter of a father in the British Army, Garside had an itinerant childhood, growing up in several places in England, and spending a significant portion of her adolescence aboard a yacht. She rose to prominence as the lead vocalist of the indie noise rock band Daisy Chainsaw, which she formed in 1989 in London with guitarist Crispin Gray. Bettis Alston Garside 葛思德 (November 22, 1894 – August 1, 1989), better known as B.A. Garside, was an educator, author, and executive administrator for several U.S. charities related to China. Early life B.A. Garside was born in Stringtown, Oklahoma and spent most of his early life in the state, receiving his bachelor's degree from the University of Oklahoma. After serving in the U.S. Navy during the First World War, Garside briefly served as the principal of Stringtown High School, before completing a master's degree at Columbia University in 1922. Life in China In 1922, B.A. Garside became an education missionary in China under the direction of the Presbyterian Church. Melanie "Mel" Garside-Wight (born 11 August 1979) is an English footballer, and former England women's national football team player. A forward or winger comfortable on either flank, Garside-Wight began her career with local club Bradford City and later joined Doncaster Belles. She was known as Melanie Garside until she married Gillian Wight in May 2010 and added her surname to her own. Club career Garside-Wight came to prominence with Bradford City Women, playing in the FA Women's Premier League National Division and achieving England recognition. Lieutenant Colonel Kenneth Garside (1913 – 1983) was a librarian, information theorist and World War II British Intelligence Corps officer. Education and career Born in Bradford in 1913, Garside was educated at Bradford Grammar School and the University of Leeds. He became an Assistant Librarian at the University of Leeds in 1937, before going to war in 1939. He was commissioned into the Intelligence Corps in 1941, and served in the Headquarters, 21 Army Group, in 1945, where he was instrumental in establishing The Intelligence Library of the Control Commission for Germany in Bad Oeynhausen (later moved to Herford). Jeannine Garside (born April 14, 1978) is a Canadian former professional boxer who competed from 2004 to 2010. She was a two-weight world champion, having held the WIBA super bantamweight title from 2005 to 2006; the WIBA featherweight title twice between 2006 and 2010; and the unified WBC and WBO female featherweight titles in 2010. Garside Classification
The Garside Classification Scheme is a library classification system used in most of the libraries of University College London (UCL). It was devised by Kenneth Garside while he was deputy librarian there. Intellectually, it was based on the close relationship between the library and the teaching departments. The library at UCL rejected the major published classification schemes because "none of them would generally acceptable to the teaching departments without such major modifications as would have destroyed its essential character." Instead, it was modeled around the "subject reading rooms" into which the collection had been divided. The intent was to utilise the expertise of the departments, and their teaching needs in drawing up the divisions within the scheme. Charles Garside, Sr. (May 12, 1898 – October 31, 1964) was a 20th-century lawyer who served in a number of publicly prominent roles in New York State, the most notable involving the State Commission against Discrimination, the formation of Blue Cross/Blue Shield of New York, and the State University of New York. Biography Garside was born in Middletown, Connecticut and his studies at Cornell University were interrupted by America's entry into World War I. He served as a Private in the United States Marine Corps. Benjamin Charles Garside (June 26, 1863 - August 9, 1933) was an American machinist from Milwaukee, Wisconsin who served one term as a People's Party member of the Wisconsin State Assembly. Background Garside was born in Glossop, Derbyshire, England, on June 26, 1863. He came to Wisconsin in 1864 and settled at Milwaukee, was educated in the Second Ward public school of Milwaukee, and became a machinist by trade. He lived in South Chicago, Illinois from 1880 to 1883 before returning to Milwaukee. Charles Brierley Garside (6 April 1818 – 21 May 1876) was an English Roman Catholic priest. Biography Garside was born on 6 April 1818 at Manchester, was only son of Joseph Garside, surgeon and a distinguished ornithologist, by Mary Ann, daughter of Thomas Pearson. From the grammar school of his native city, where he obtained an exhibition in 1837, he was sent to Brasenose College, Oxford, in 1838. There he gained one of the Somerset scholarships, carried off the college prize for Latin and English essays in 1840, and became in the same year Hulme divinity exhibitioner. He graduated B.A. on 28 May 1841, taking a third class in literis humanioribus, and commenced M.A. on 27 June 1844.
